Radio Netherlands, TAIPEI: Taiwan has held a military parade for the first time in 16 years. Two new Taiwanese-designed missiles were on show during the parade, held to celebrate National Day. Analysts say the event's primary aim was to deliver a message to China, which views Taiwan as a renegade province.
In a nationally televised address, President Chen Shui-bian said the growth of China's military might posed a threat to the entire world and called on Beijing to dismantle the almost 1,000 missiles aimed at Taiwan.
Military analysts say one of the new Taiwanese weapons is a cruise missile with a range of at least 600 kilometres that can be launched from either land or sea and could hit targets in southeastern China.
