, The Visby corvettes have undergone an intense period of trials. Four have already been handed over to the customer, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, which has conducted a range of trials, subjecting the vessels to stringent tests designed to determine their full capabilities.
The fifth of series, HMS Karlstad, has been launched and is now being outfitted by Kockums. The majority of her engineering trials at sea have already been completed. Acceptance tests are scheduled to start this summer.
All five Visby corvettes will form part of the new Swedish rapid reaction force, for which they are ideally suited. The vessels enable their crews to see and hear everything, while remaining undetected, which obviously give them a whole series of tactical advantages. The corvette’s commander can also choose to exit stealth mode, if he wishes to make a show of force, only to “vanish” again.
The Visby corvettes provide the Swedish Navy with enhanced capability and extreme flexibility. They are designed to handle a broad range of missions, such as mine clearance, ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare), surface combat, marine surveillance and protection.
