Moscow: Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov announced Tuesday that Russia would build a new missile defense warning station in the south of the country, thus decreasing its dependence on radar systems based in nations such as Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
“Constructing new, highly efficient systems is one of the most important issues facing our national security,” said Ivanov, speaking during a visit to a military base in the Saint Petersburg region, the Russian news agency Itar-Tass reported.
Referring to anti-missile stations located at Russian bases in the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Ukraine, Ivanov said a new system would allow the country “to reduce our dependence on information received from “Southern crescent” stations in foreign countries.
