Lockheed Martin, OWEGO, NY: The U.S. Army has awarded Lockheed Martin a $16 million contract to provide 37 AN/APR-48A Radar Frequency Interferometer (RFI) systems for the AH-64D Apache Longbow Helicopter.

The RFI systems provide situational awareness and threat warning aboard Apache Longbow helicopters. Seven of the systems will supplement the current U.S. Army inventory, and the remaining 30 systems are contracted for Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“The AN/APR-48A greatly enhances the capabilities of the Apache Longbow,” said Dan Rice, director of Products at Lockheed Martin Systems Integration – Owego. “Our system increases the lethality and survivability of the helicopter, helping pilots do their job effectively and come home safely.”

The Apache Longbow is designed for precision strike and armed reconnaissance missions, and the Lockheed Martin-designed and built AN/APR-48A enhances mission success by passively detecting, accurately identifying and precisely locating radar emitters. The RFI system performs target acquisition and cueing of Radar Frequency threat systems, such as surface-to-air missile sites or radar-guided anti-aircraft artillery.

Lockheed Martin has delivered more than 330 AN/APR-48A systems to the U.S. Army and international military customers. RFI-equipped Apache Longbow helicopters have been deployed around the globe, serving in Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 135,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The corporation reported 2005 sales of $37.2 billion.
