Airpower: F-15s patrol Afghan, Iraqi skies

SOUTHWEST ASIA: Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations July 5, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles dropped guided bomb unit-12s, 31s and 38s to destroy enemy combatants engaging friendly forces in the vicinity of Jalalabad. The joint terminal attack controller confirmed the mission successful.

In the vicinity of Zormat, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs dropped GBU-12s to destroy anti-Afghan forces engaging friendly forces. The JTAC reported the mission successful.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer dropped GBU-38s to destroy enemy combatants engaging friendly forces in the vicinity of Musa Qaleh. The JTAC declared the mission successful.

To deter enemy activities, French Mirage-2000s performed shows of force in the vicinity of Farah, Musa Qala, and Qalat. JTACs confirmed the missions successful.

To deter enemy activities, A-10s performed shows of force in the vicinity of Farah, Gardez, and Ghazni. JTACs reported the missions successful.

In the vicinity of Ajrestan and Nagalam, F15Es performed shows of force to deter enemy activities. JTACs declared the missions successful

In the vicinity of Sultan-E Bakwah, a Royal Air Force GR-7 Harrier performed a show of force to deter enemy activities. The JTAC confirmed the mission successful.

In total, 43 close-air-support missions were flown as part of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Thirteen Air Force and RAF surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Afghanistan. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

In Iraq, coalition aircraft flew 55 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions integrated and synchronized with coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-four Air Force, Navy and Royal Australian Air Force surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions as part of operations in Iraq. Additionally, four Air Force and RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intra-theater heavy airlift, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 149 airlift sorties were flown, 560 tons of cargo were delivered and 4,420 passengers were transported. This included approximately 64,640 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and Iraq flew as part of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On July 4, Air Force, French, and RAF tanker crews flew 53 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.7 million pounds of fuel to 226 receiving aircraft.
