US Navy to Modernise the MH53 Helicopter Simulator

Indra, The US Navy has awarded Indra Systems, a US subsidiary of Indra, the contract to modernise the MH53 helicopter simulator stationed at the US Navy Base in Norfolk (Virginia) for a total of 9.2 million dollars.

The project, one of the Training Systems Contract II (TSC II) framework tenders, will provide Indra with the possibility of contributing to one of the most emblematic US Navy platforms. The MH53 is the largest helicopter in the western hemisphere and is used to transport troops and stores as well as for mine detection and neutralisation missions.

The modernisation work on the simulator will be co-ordinated between Indra's simulation development centre in Orlando (Florida) and the base where the simulator operates, Norfolk (Virginia), and will require two years to complete. The upgrade considered is wide-ranging and will affect the instruction post as well as the simulator's central and visual computer. It also includes the flight control system and improvements to the aerodynamic model.

The contract will allow Indra to position itself for future projects related to this platform and also confirms the company's excellence in the field of simulation, as the contract has been won without previous references in this programme.

Indra Systems' proposal was selected through a public tender in competition with another four offers as part of the restricted tender procedure known as Training Systems Contract II (TSC II).

TSC II was introduced by the US Navy as the mainstay of its tender procedures for the simulation department towards the end of 2003. Only the companies that qualify through this framework programme are eligible for the financial resources allocated to develop, modernise and complete the simulation systems for over 20 platforms. Indra, through its subsidiary company, Indra Systems, is the only non-American company on the suppliers list.
