, The Royal Norwegian Navy recently announced the selection of a South African radar to supplement radar surveillance capabilities aboard their new warships. These radars, to be supplied under an order from the Norwegian Defence Procurement Division (NDPD), are to be applied in support of helicopter operations and other supplementary surveillance roles aboard the new Fridtjof Nansen-Class frigates.

The radar is to be produced by Reutech Radar Systems (RRS) based in Stellenbosch South Africa, in conjunction with their Norwegian partner Electronicon AS located in Bergen, Norway.

According to Captain Nils Andreas Stensønes, Project Manager for the Nansen frigates, “The RSR 210N meets NDPD requirements and will improve the Nansen class helicopter control capability in adverse weather conditions.”

“Selection of the RSR 210N radar by a leading NATO Navy represents a significant achievement for South African and Norwegian industries. We expect that this win will secure the product’s position in the world market,” the companies announced in a joint statement. “Securing a launch customer for our new surveillance radar also realizes a product which appeals to a wide naval market. There has already been considerable interest in the product from other international as well as South African users, and we expect follow-on orders as a result of the success in Norway”.

The RSR 210N product launch was held in October 2005, with highly successful demonstrations being performed in February 2007 to South African and foreign Navies. These trials demonstrated RSR 210N’s superior performance in the detection of both air and surface targets under adverse environmental conditions.

RRS has also supplied eight RTS 6400 tracking radars, which are already in service aboard the SA Navy’s Valour-Class frigates.
