Phased Array Radar Systems for the ANZAC Frigates

Australian Department of Defence, CEA Technologies, based in Fyshwick, Canberra has been contracted to continue their design and development of phased array radar systems (CEAFAR and CEAMOUNT) for the ANZAC Ship Anti Ship Missile Defence (ASMD) upgrades.

On 9 September 2005, Senator Hill announced the Government's intention to pursue a CEA active phased array radar system as part of this upgrade. The Defence Material Organisation has recently signed a contract with CEA, valued at $12 million, for further design and risk reduction work leading to a production contract expected to be awarded this year.

“This contract will enable CEA and Defence to cooperate in developing CEA's phased array design baseline, taking account of Navy's requirements for integrating their design into the ANZAC ship hull and combat system,” Commodore Drew McKinnie RAN, DMO's Director General Major Surface Ships said.

“ANZAC Alliance Team Members Tenix Defence and Saab Systems will collaborate with Defence, the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and CEA in this cutting-edge developmental work.”

“CEA's innovation and exceptional technology is a key element of Australian defence industry capabilities. This is a complex project, but with the expertise in industry and Defence working in collaboration, we are confident of creating a system that offers exceptional capability. We look forward to seeing a world-leading system at sea in our ANZAC frigates, defending them from missile attack,” Commodore McKinnie said.

The ASMD upgrade project is estimated to create up to 130 jobs during acquisition and installation, with 25 jobs to support the capability through life, with about $260 million to be invested in Australia.
