PARSIPPANY, NJ: DRS Technologies, Inc. announced today that it received a $20 million contract from the Space and Airborne Systems division of the Raytheon Company in El Segundo, California, to support the initial phase of the new Silent Knight Tactical Radar program. The program will support the rotary- and fixed-wing aircraft of the U.S. Special Operations Command, headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.

The work will be accomplished by the company's DRS Sustainment Systems unit in St. Louis, Missouri, which will provide crucial and patented radar technology for the Raytheon-led team. The company's technology will help the team develop a common, multi-mode radar system that includes terrain-following and terrain-avoidance, navigation, ground map and weather mode capabilities to assist special operations forces safely enter and exit dangerous areas at night while flying at a low altitude. In addition to this special technology, DRS will provide other services and equipment during the design and development process.

The lead aircraft to receive this new radar will be the MH-47G Chinook. Eventually, it will be fielded on the MH-60M Black Hawk, MC-130H Combat Talon and CV22 Block 30 Osprey aircraft.

“This award is significant to DRS and recognizes the importance of our unique technology in improving the safety of the special operations warfighter,” said Thomas G. Cornwell, president of DRS's Sustainment Systems Segment. “The combined experience of DRS and Raytheon in supporting the special operations community and in developing specialized radar technology will ensure a low-risk, high-performance solution.”

DRS Technologies, headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey, is a leading supplier of integrated products, services and support to military forces, intelligence agencies and prime contractors worldwide. The company employs approximately 10,000 people.
