Naval Radars Improve Security of Norwegian Coastal Waters

EADS,

EADS Defence & Security (DS) has delivered the last of four TRS-3D naval radars to the Royal Norwegian Coast Guard, thus completing a two digit million Euro project aiming at improved security of Norway’s coastal waters and safe helicopter guidance in extreme weather conditions.

Under a contract awarded in 2005, Defence Electronics, an integrated Business Unit of EADS Defence & Security, has equipped the three offshore patrol vessels (OPV) of the “Nordkapp” and one arctic offshore patrol vessel (AOPV) of the “Svalbard” class with its TRS-3D/16-ES self-defence multi-mode Radar. Due to a running production line using anonymous batch production, EADS DS was able to finalize the project in less than three years in spite of challenging operational requirements of the coast guard in the arctic sea.

The new systems are intended to replace older equipment which is at present not capable of providing a reliable and comprehensive situation picture as well as safe helicopter guidance under the extreme environmental conditions of the Norwegian littoral waters. State of the art, sensitive and reliable hardware together with specifically tailored software algorithms based on more than 15 years of experience enabled EADS DS to manage even the most challenging littoral scenarios with small, manoeuvering air targets at see state 5 in front of the Norwegian cliff lines. The integration of the systems on board the ships has been carried out in close collaboration with the Norwegian companies Data Process Automasjon AS, Norwegian Defence Depot Maintenance Devision (NDLO) and Fiskerstrand Verft AS.

“You need extremely powerful sensors to guarantee reliable surveillance data during the demanding Coast Guard missions in the polar littoral environment of the Norwegian coastal waters”, said Bernd Wenzler, CEO Defence Electronics. “Our TRS-3D radar has operationally shown that it is the right answer to these challenging security requirements.”

The TRS-3D is a 3-dimensional multimode naval radar for air and sea surveillance. It includes the ability to correlate plots and tracks of targets with the MSSR 2000 I identification system for automatic identification of vessels and aircrafts. The radar is deployed by naval forces in more than 50 units around the world. Among the ships equipped are the new K130 corvettes of the German Navy, the US Coast Guard National Security Cutters and the “Squadron 2000” patrol boats of the Finnish Navy.

The TRS-3D is available in different versions and can serve as a stand-alone radar for the special requirements of smaller ships operating in coastal waters or as the main squadron and self-defence radar on frigates and larger ships. It is used for automatically locating and tracking all types of air and sea targets. Thanks to the latest signal processing technologies, the TRS-3D is particularly suited for the early detection of low flying or slow moving objects, such as helicopters, under extreme environmental conditions.

Defence Electronics is an integrated activity of the EADS Defence and Security Systems Division (DS). DS is a systems solutions provider for armed forces and civil security worldwide. Its portfolio ranges from sensors and secure networks through missiles to aircraft and UAVs as well as global security, service and support solutions. In 2007, DS – with around 22,000 employees – achieved revenues of EUR 5.5 billion. EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2007, EADS generated revenues of EUR 39.1 billion and employs a workforce of about 116,000.
