BAE Systems,

MINNEAPOLIS: BAE Systems has received an additional order from the U.S. Navy to deliver 67, Mk 38 Mod 2 gun mounts to go aboard cruisers, destroyers and Landing Ship Transport Dock (LPD) ships.

The Mk 38 Mod 2 is a 25mm stabilized gun system that provides the last layer of ship protection. The system is highly autonomous and has an effective range of approximately 1 mile.

“The Mk 38 Mod 2 meets the U.S. Navy's urgent need to improve the lethality and effectiveness of its ship self-protection systems,” said Dave Lassek, vice president of Navy Program for BAE Systems. “This is the gun you want aboard your ship when you have an enemy threat coming in that has gotten past all the other protection systems.”

BAE Systems has teamed with Rafael Armament Development Authority, Ltd., for the development and production of the Mk 38 Mod 2. The order releases $39 million from the current $395 million contract. The minor caliber gun system is assembled and tested at BAE Systems' Louisville site.

Lassek was in Washington, D.C. for the Navy League Symposium and briefed the media on the Mk 38 Mod 2 gun system. The briefing was held at the National Press Club. Visit Naval Ship Self-Protection Presentation to listen to the briefing.

BAE Systems is the premier transatlantic defense and aerospace company delivering a full range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, information technology solutions and customer support services. With more than 100,000 employees worldwide, BAE Systems' sales exceeded $28 billion in 2005.
