Argentina Air Force News and Discussion

so whats your opinion on this purchase? Argentina phased out the Super Etendards he had and now buys them again. I think this decision is a setback..
Worthless. The only benefit will be keeping a handful of pilots used to flying supersonic ops, something which would be a lot easier to do through secondments.

Whatever there is left of the crushed and rusted can, it's been toe-poked along with a very worn pair of shoes.

Does Argentina have anything else which can air-launch Exocet AShM? That is the first capability which comes to my mind that could justify getting Super Etendards.

Does Argentina have any air-launched Exocets?

Argentina's air forces need to be able to patrol its territorial waters & EEZ (which are pretty big) & its land borders, & protect against the occasional loony who might want to crash a plane into something. It doesn't have any threatening neighbours, or anyone who might try to invade from the sea.

I think Argentina should move on the same direction as Brazil and select Gripen (12 of them would be enough for their economic capacity) which is the cheapest from the modern multi-role aircrafts. I don't know however whether UK could block such a deal

That's true, but it's balanced by what swerve said earlier. They have no serious requirement for an Exocet-like capability, their neighbours are all friendly and there isn't any realistic scenario where they'd need to fire them off.

It certainly shouldn't be a bigger priority than being able to fulfill basic QRA in my opinion. They're thinking about renting Brazilian fighters to cover the G20 summit, however this might explain the knee-jerk Etendard purchase; get something supersonic with a couple of basic IR missiles.

Multiple points to consider for this question, but it has the same result

  • I believe the UK can and has blocked Gripen to Argentina? Or have said they would at least.
  • Would Argentina want to be reliant on British spares for the core of their air force?
  • I believe Argentina postulated having a 'no-UK' version, but that'd be horrendously expensive and Argentina would have to pay all of the costs

They're definitely up sh*t creek without a paddle considering the wide variety of avenues explored with nothing to show for it.

The UK can't block Gripens from being sold by either Sweden or Brazil. It can, however, refuse to allow them to have UK-made parts, which make up a large proportion of the Gripen (about 30%), including the radar of the JAS39E.

Finding substitutes would therefore require massive re-engineering, so the UK has an effective veto on the sale of Gripens.

Ah. Just read Vulcan's answer. What he wrote.

They simply lack the cash. They could easily buy Chinese or Russian fighters which would provide credible capability, but they cannot or will not supply the budget necessary to afford even them.

Apparently the issue with JF-17/J-10* wasn't the cost of the basic aircraft, but that they wanted to fill it with Western/Israeli avionics and the like which naturally didn't go down well with any party, in addition to costing a bomb.

They've made moves towards all the suppliers in one form or another but came up with nothing, while in part it's a cash issue, it's also an issue that their AF don't want to get saddled with poor equipment, both of those combined doesn't make anybody happy.

*vaguely remember people at the time claiming they wanted J-10 but were offered JF-17

Since they bought Supere Etendards why not Mirage 2000s?? it would be far more better choice in terms of quality for a state in such economics as Argentina. Mirage 2000s still serve in a lot of air forces

Long story short no budget, doesn't mean the air force does not want it, does not mean Argentina could not afford. It means the government is unwilling or being generous unable to provide such funding.

Mmmm...is Navy doing QRA? That'd seem like Air Force task. Also, Etendard is supersonic only in a dive and it has no afterburner: it would be only slightly better QRA asset than the Pampas.

Good side with the SEM purchase is that French Etendards were modernized to the max. I don't know if the sale included all the targeting, recon and ECM pods, but if it did, it would give them most advanced attack avionics set in Latin America. The price is so low though that it likely only includes the airframes and some spares.

Looks like Argentina has selected 10/FA50,s from South Korea as interim fighters. Wonder if this deal will go through, and wonder if it will lead to a purchase of KFX when available?
Also, Korea has donated a decommissioned ULSAN class frigate, 35 yo. The frigate will be delivered with only 2x 76mm guns and 2 x 30mm guns. Its old, and looks like will function as a patrol frigate only.

Yep and after all the other fast jet deals have fallen through because of funding, I won't hold my breathe.

I noticed that reportedly they looked at both the Gripen and Typhoon as well as several other Aircraft, I would think there chances of getting hold of either them even if they could have afforded them was x2, Buckley’s and none considering the degree of British involvement in both programs.

In Gripen's case it was really Brazil swearing that they can (eventually) make a Gripen that does not use British parts. This is technically true, but Argentina does not have the money to finance that, so it was wasted effort on Brazil's part. Sweden and Saab, as I recall, stayed quiet and noncommittal, likely realizing from the very beginning that Argentina can't afford Gripen anyway.

I will believe it when I see one in Argentine colours land at an Argentine military base flown an Argentine pilot. They've been kicking the tyres of many many jets over the years and every deal has fallen through.
