Italian Navy Discussions and Updates

The Horizon/Orrizonte has rather limited commonality with Type 45. T45's a bit bigger, but more important is that it has completely different propulsion, & AFAIK the only weapons & sensors it shares with Horizon/Orrizonte are the Aster 15 & 30 missiles & the S1850M long range radar.

But yes, interesting that they're looking to move away from the Horizon/Orrizonte platform to something quite a lot bigger.

An important day for the Italian Navy with the first landing of a F35B on the flight deck of ITS Cavour.

This article from Naval News

Crawl, walk run, the transition from Harrier to the JSF is certainly on the way.

Video on first Marina Militare own F-35B landing on carvour. For me it will be interesting to see how Italian Navy and Italian Air Force F-35B sq will be operating in their carriers. Whether will be like RN sq and RAF sq type of Joint Operation, or each sq operating on seperate occasion.

With the first sea-going conducted on 12 August, the shipbuilding and sea-trials programme is on schedule as originally planned.

The Trieste L9890 is much larger and heavier than the ship it will replace, the Guiseppe Garibaldi 551, which is in service since 1985. It is also larger and heavier than the Canberra-class of LHDs, the Izumo-class of helicopter destroyers and even the Cavour 550 aircraft carrier.

Looking to the superstructure it looks like it has some Thaon di Revel-clas DNA.
The Trieste is expected to be commissioned in June 2022

It definitely has some Queen Elizabeth class DNA. Two islands!

It's a couple of metres shorter & narrower than Izumo. Any difference in reported tonnage is probably due to the Japanese tendency to use measures which give low figures.

It's a Cavour with some functional modules moved around internally to make space for the added well deck, and some external elements "shifted" or "resculpted" to both accomodate the internal moving and to improve on some deficiencies probably identified with Cavour.

From Defense Web TV on SeaFuture exhibition in La Spezia. This episode mostly related to UAV from Leonardo and Underwater drone from Italian vendor.

Second day report on Sea Future exhibition in La Spezia. For me it is interesting to see what Fincantieri Next Tech unit can provide, and also on end part of Video MBDA New Teseo SSM for Marina Militare and Aster B1 NT as BMD, something that seems MBDA answer for SM-3.

Some news about our new subs.

The new elements, are mainly, Lithium batteries and Deep Strike

The first two new boats maintains the same diesel/electric and AIP propulsion system of the U212A design but introduce a new energy storage and management system based on Lithium-iron-phosphate batteries, a game changer technology in underwater domain,
The U212NFS CMS is capable to manage a larger panoply of weapons and payloads, namely the Leonardo Black Shark Advanced (BSA) heavyweight torpedo version developed for the Italian Navy, while the new boats are fitted for the deployment of long-range deep strike cruise missiles, which capability opens new operational scenarios and deterrence to the Italian MoD

Laid down the first Italian U212NFS, it should be sort of a new generation sub, let’s see if they actually deliver on the deep strike missile promise

First some news from Januari. The first ship of this new class of 193 meter long replenishment ships was commissioned in March 2021.
And now a second Logistic Support Ship (LSS) for the Italian Navy is under construction, it is projected for delivery in 2025.
The contract also includes the option for a third ship.

And last week the first of the PPA frigates, Paolo Thaon di Revel is delivered to the Marina Militare. The unique looking ships are in three versions: LIGHT, LIGHT + and FULL. Paolo Thaon di Revel seems to be from the 'LIGHT' version. The second, third and fourth vessels are all already launched.
