Aerospace & Defence Industries Association of Europe, BEN-GURION INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT: The Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) Heron Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) has received a Special UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) Type Permit from the Israel Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to operate in Israel airspace for non-military missions.

The CAA permit was issued after Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI)'s Malat UAV Division successfully complied with the requirements and procedures established by the CAA to regulate all non-military UAV operations in Israel. The Director of the CAA appointed a special certification committee to review current and future civil UAV certification issues. The permit allows Heron UAV to be operated in full coordination with Israeli Air Traffic Control regulations. Heron is the first MALE UAV to be granted a civil permit to operate in Israeli airspace.

The Heron UAV will be able to operate in Israel airspace with various payload configurations such as Electro-Optics, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Maritime Patrol Radar.

The Heron is designed to perform all-weather intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions and is capable of endurance flight of more than 40 hours.

The Heron MALE system was recently delivered to the Israel Air Force.

Heron is part of Israel Aerospace Industries' family of UAVs that are operating all over the world. Malat, through extensive international teaming, manages comprehensive system development, integration and manufacturing of UAV systems that fulfill the interoperability, commonality, and connectivity requirements that users anticipate.

Consequently, Malat has become an acknowledged UAV brand name, with more than 30 years of operational experience in system development, integration, manufacturing, providing integrated logistics support, depot maintenance and technical assistance to fielded operational systems.
