, The Government of the Republic of Estonia authorised on 22 February 2007 the Minister of Defence to sign a contract for the procurement of a very short-range air defence missile system.

The Government of the Republic of Estonia invited in August 2005 Raytheon Company and MBDA France to participate in a tender for the acquisition of a very short-range air defence missile system.

In April 2006 the companies presented their tenders. A commission, which was established by the Minister of Defence and included representatives from the Ministry of Defence, the General Staff of the Defence Forces, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications suggested MBDA France together with Saab AB to be invited to contract negotiations.

In late November 2006 the Government of the Republic of Estonia authorised the Ministry of Defence to start contract negotiations with MBDA France and Saab AB.

The contract will result in the delivery of an air defence system, which will include Giraffe AMB radars, command posts, communication equipment, missile launchers and Mistral missiles. MBDA France and Saab AB will deliver the products to the Ministry of Defence over the next 2 years.

The 1st Infantry Brigade will receive a modern air defence system in accordance with the Defence Forces Development Plan 2010, which was approved in 2004. The air defence system to be procured is capable of defending the infantry brigade against air attacks both in Estonia and when being deployed in NATO missions.

The magnitude of this contract exceeds all of Estonia
