EADS Successfully Passes Lab and Field Testing for the BOS Digital Radio Network in Germany

EADS, ULM, Germany: As part of the implementation of the digital radio network for security authorities and organizations (BOS) in Germany, EADS has been selected by the Procurement Office of the Ministry of the Interior (BMI), as being the most competitive bid. BMI had previously requested EADS to conduct extensive lab and field testing.

“We are very pleased with this further positive intermediate result,” said Stefan Zoller, the EADS Board Member responsible for Defence and Security Systems. “Following evaluation of the written bid documentation and completion of the practical tests, this announcement is strong proof that EADS is fully capable of meeting the requirements of the security authorities.”

The lab tests were conducted in May in the EADS development centre in Helsinki and were attended by representatives of the Procurement Office, the Federal States and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The purpose of these tests was to verify the technical features being offered. This enabled EADS to successfully demonstrate the service packages that were required and offered.

The subsequent field test validated other system functions under tactical operational conditions. In just three weeks, EADS and its partner Siemens set up and successfully put into operation an extensive network in Berlin and Stuttgart. Together with the Fire Services, federal and regional police supported the Procurement Office in carrying out the tests. This enabled realistic operational situations, together with load conditions, to be simulated and the system behaviour checked.

Now that the Procurement Office of the Ministry of the Interior has declared the EADS bid to be the most cost-effective, contract award is expected within the coming weeks. This is necessary if the four planned subnetworks are to be implemented before the end of this year. This would then enable the German security authorities and organisations to be provided with a uniform nationwide network by 31 December 2010 at the latest – a major contribution to domestic and international security in Germany.

EADS Secure Networks, which bears the responsibility within EADS for BOSNet, is part of the Defence and Communications Systems (DCS) Business Unit, the EADS “Systems House”, and is an integrated part of the EADS Defence & Security Systems (DS) Division.

With revenues of about EUR 5.6 billion in 2005 and roughly 23,000 employees across nine nations, the EADS Defence & Security Systems (DS) division forms the defence and security pillar within EADS. As a Large Systems Integrator, it offers integrated system solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and global security. It is active in the areas of manned and unmanned integrated combat and mission air systems, including related training systems, and in missile systems, battlefield management systems for all branches, global security solutions, secure networks, defence electronics, sensors and avionics as well as related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2005, EADS generated revenues of EUR 34.2 billion and employed a workforce of about 113,000.
