European Commission, BRUSSELS: Improving the competitiveness of the European defence industry was the leitmotiv of a meeting of Commission Vice President Verheugen with CEOs of EU defence companies and other stakeholders in Brussels today.
Discussions focussed on how to shape an appropriate future European defence industrial policy. The participants discussed developing a European Defence Equipment Market (EDEM) taking account of the specificity of defence goods and encouraging industrial restructuring/consolidation guided by market forces in the various defence sectors (aeronautics, space, electronics, land systems, shipyards). Relations with third country partners (in particular transatlantic relations) were also on the agenda.
