Australian Department of Defense,

Canberra, Australia: The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) completed Exercise ASWEX 07 today; a bilateral exercise involving naval and air force elements from Australia and New Zealand. ASWEX 07 was conducted off the coast of Western Australia from 5 to 16 November 2007. ASWEX 07 is a significant bilateral exercise, improving Fleet interoperability and ties between Australia and New Zealand. This exercise is focused on collective anti-submarine warfare concepts, tactics and procedures.

The RAN was represented by Frigates HMA Ships Parramatta, Perth and Adelaide, as well as the Auxiliary Oiler HMAS Sirius. In addition, the RAN was also represented by Submarines Waller, Collins and Rankin. The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) was represented by the Frigate HMNZS Te Kaha.

Air support was provided by the RAN's 816 Squadron (Seahawk Helicopters) and the Royal Australian Air Force's Number 11 Squadron (Maritime Patrol AP-3C Orions). The Australian aircraft were joined by P-3K Orions from the Royal New Zealand Air Force's 5 Squadron.

The Commander Task Group, Captain Peter Laver, RAN, said: “ASWEX provides a vital training opportunity for the forces of both countries. It also enhances and maintains the friendship between the Service men and women of the two nations.”
