Airpower: C-17s deliver troops, cargo

SOUTHWEST ASIA: Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan during operations Nov. 16, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

In Afghanistan, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles engaged enemy combatants with a guided bomb unit-31 and a GBU-38 in Nangalam. The enemy combatants were attacking a coalition convoy after it had been struck by an improvised explosive device. The on-scene joint terminal attack controller reported the mission as a success.

Enemy combatants were engaged by cannon fire and GBU-12s from F-15Es in Nangalam. The enemy combatants were engaging friendly forces in the area. The mission was deemed successful by the JTAC.

During another mission in Nangalam, an F-15E engaged enemy combatants with a GBU-12. The mission was reported as a success.

A show of force was performed by an F-15E to deter enemy actions in Orgune. The JTAC reported the mission as a success.

An Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities in Ghazni. The mission was reported as successful by the JTAC.

A French Mirage 2000 targeted enemy combatants with a GBU-12 in Sangin. Enemy combatants were engaging friendly forces in the area.

Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s engaged an enemy position in Sangin with Enhanced Paveway II munitions and rockets. Enemy combatants at the position were engaging friendly forces. The JTAC reported the mission as a success

Shows of forces were performed by A-10s and an F-15E to deter enemy activities in Bagram. The missions were reported as successful.

In total, 39 close-air-support missions were flown in support of the ISAF and Afghan security forces, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

Seven Air Force and RAF surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In Iraq, an Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon conducted a show of force to deter enemy activities in Al Muqdadiyah. The mission was reported as a success by the JTAC.

A RAF Tornado GR-4 released flares in a show of force to deter enemy actions in Baghdad. The JTAC reported the mission as a success.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 46 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions supported coalition ground forces, protected key infrastructure, provided over watch for reconstruction activities and helped to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Twenty-six Air Force and Navy surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Additionally, two RAF aircraft performed tactical reconnaissance.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intratheater heavy airlift support, helping to sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa.

Approximately 155 airlift sorties were flown; 462 tons of cargos were delivered, and 2,977 passengers were transported. This included approximately 43,320 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Iraq and Japan flew in support of operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.

On Nov. 15, Air Force and RAF aerial refueling crews flew 45 sorties and off-loaded approximately 2.7 million pounds of fuel to 233 receiving aircraft.
