US State Department, WASHINGTON: By an overwhelming majority, the U.S. House of Representatives voted for the proposed U.S.-India civil nuclear agreement, the first step in the approval process of the groundbreaking deal.
The July 26 vote was 359 in favor and 68 opposed to the agreement that would allow India to buy fuel and nuclear reactors from the United States to develop cleaner energy resources. As a first step toward civil nuclear cooperation, the Bush administration is asking Congress to adopt an India-specific amendment to the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 that would allow India to be treated as a country in good standing with the international nuclear nonproliferation regime for the purposes of trade in nuclear technology and materials.
President Bush quickly issued a statement commending the vote.
