SELEX Sensors & Airborne Systems, ROME: SELEX Sistemi Integrati, a Finmeccanica company, signed a contract worth 230 million Euro with the Gendarmerie Nationale Algérienne to provide a Large System for Homeland security.

This agreement is one of the most important ever subscribed by a Finmeccanica Company for the sale of Large Systems in the Homeland Security domain. SELEX Sistemi Integrati, together with other two Finmeccanica companies, SELEX Communications and Elsag Datamat, will provide equipments for surveillance and security and control, supported by a communications network able to integrate different technologies and services.

The system is made of a flexible, open and modular command and control architecture, working through operational centres at regional and intermediate level, and of 250 local control centres, all over the interested areas. The whole system is also completed by mobile command posts.

The supply, in which SELEX Sistemi Integrati plays a major role as prime contractor, will be delivered within 30 months from the contract signature. The system will cover the Southern territory of Algeria. It represents the extension of the RUNITEL programme, which will upgrade the whole infrastructure of the Gendarmerie Nationale Algérienne, from the headquarters to the territorial units.

SELEX Sistemi Integrati, in line with its mission of “Architect” and Large Systems’ integrator within Finmeccanica Group, will be responsible for the design, installation and integration of all the subsystems necessary to the programme. The system will supply, at different levels, all the typical C4I capabilities, such as Command and Control, Communication, Computer and Intelligence facilities. .

The equipments will make use of all these capabilities to deliver support to command decision, investigation analysis, information elaboration and assorted data fusion, emergencies and human resources management. SELEX Sistemi Integrati will also be in charge for the total supply of logistic support, including training and after sales assistance. The Company will also ensure the necessary civil engineering work for new and existing centres and installations.

Within the main system architecture, SELEX Communications will provide the complete communication network, including the TETRA mobile communications system, besides HF, satellite and microwave radio connections. The network will provide several services based on audio and video data.

On its behalf, Elsag Datamat will make the software applications available to guarantee the running of the systems, according to a safe, open and modular architecture.

Giorgio Zappa, Chief Operating Officer of Finmeccanica, commented: “This contract in Algeria is Finmeccanica’s first major success story abroad in the fundamental sector of Homeland Security, which is now as important as our Defence business, involving many of our subsidiaries. I’d like to highlight that the successes achieved in the field of Homeland Security will provide a significant boost to growth in our Defence Electronics business, which today represents more than 30% of our revenues”.

Marina Grossi, Chief Executive Officer of SELEX Sistemi Integrati, said:” The contract signed with Algeria represents a great success not only for SELEX Sistemi Integrati, working as a prime contractor, but also for SELEX Communications and Elsag Datamat that take part in this and other relevant programmes. The key factor for the success of the Group is the integration and synergies among all of the Finmeccanica companies operating in the Homeland Security sector”.

SELEX Sistemi Integrati has been in the Country since 1997, when the Algerian authorities chose its Air Traffic management systems within the TRAFCA programme, to secure the total coverage of the Algerian air traffic.

With the subscription of the RUNITEL contract Algeria has confirmed its trust to SELEX Sistemi Integrati, recognising the company as a first level player at international level, in the domain of Large Systems for Homeland Security.
