Korea Overseas Information Service, The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) plans to build advanced frigates using the country's own technology by 2015, DAPA officials said on Thursday (May 18).
The plan was made public as the agency released a 10-year arms procurement project under which the DAPA will start building 2,300 ton-class advanced frigates, called “FEX,” in July.
Meanwhile, the DAPA also revealed a plan to build a strategic naval base on Jeju Island by 2014.
The island has long been considered a tactical, strategic point to secure sea lanes for transporting energy supplies, as well as a backup for the Navy to augment its blue water naval capability.
