Hello all. I am a long time watcher of this site and felt it time to join the conversation. Only affiliation with defence is I worked on the dismantling of the former HMCS Cormorant but have an interest in naval and marine affairs from Halifax.
Welcome and greetings from across the Pond. Your post prompted me to look at some photos of HMCS Cormorant and read an article. Interesting that her origins lay in the Italian fishing fleet.

Known as the Navys love boat it hosted the first female crew members.

Have heard two stories about her. One was she was seized on the Grand Banks for fisheries violations and the Navy took her and had her modified. The second was she was final payment for Italian WW2 war reparations. Either way she was a terribly laid out vessel. When we arrived she still had one of the two submersibles aboard and the Coast Guard seized it for a future museum piece.

Both of those theories are interesting; which do you think is the most plausible?

The fact that the vessel was illegally fishing on the Grand Banks and seized is a fact. As a Mediterrainian based fishing vessel it was not designed for the north atlantic. Diesel Electric propulsion was odd to me for a fishing vessel. Was told by an old navy type that he was on a destroyer escort in the area at the time the ship was seized. Knew one of the commissioning crew divers and he said it was final payment for reparations and he hated the scow. Who knows. Either way I have my souveniers.

Hi everyone

Thanks for accepting me, I'm Nabil from Tunisia, hope everyone is doing fine.

Why there isn't a sub_forum per country ? Should be more easier and convenient ☺

Thanks again ✌
Welcome to Defencetalk, thanks for joining!

We had country based forums 15 years ago... it just turns into a shitshow so they were sent to the sub-forum graveyard. 200+ countries, 200+ sub-forums. who wants to manage that? Not me.

Thanks for the reply, yeah it make sense, also I'm not asking for a sub for every country on earth, China, Russia, USA, India, Iran, Europe, Turkey, and few others will do, and no need of sub forums for each one.

Hi defencetalk forums,

thank you for approving my registration.

I've been lurking here since the war in Ukraine broke out and finally decided to register.

Some info about me:

51 years old. Spent 12 years with the German Air Force from 1989 to 2001 (kinda Cold War guy I guess) and have always been interested in military matters.

Last rank: Oberfeldwebel (~StaffSgt/TechSgt). Never been part of the active reserve. Today I work as a software engineer.

Welcome, Sir. Cold War history is one of my big interests. Like you I grew up with it, although I am a few years older; as a precocious 13 year old schoolboy I recall listening to all the ‘Eastern bloc’ propaganda stations covering the 1979 British General Election. I was born in World Cup ⚽ year. …

… To add to my earlier reply, I too have always been interested in military matters, although unlike you I haven’t served except in the Corps at the boys’ boarding school I attended here in England. Instead I work in real estate.

I have as indicated above a special interest in the Cold War years, including the British Army of the Rhine, and a somewhat obsessive interest in the Falklands War as well.

Cheers, mate. It's somehow sad that the BAOR left Germany a few years ago. Especially now, as we seem to move straight towards Cold War 2.0.

Cheers back mate - and the next pint’s on you. And as you are in Bavaria, I’m sure you enjoy a beer . Your knowledge of colloquial English is top notch, if I may say so. …
It is extremely sad that the BAOR left Germany and part of our process of decline. Although I am culturally British (and European), I have some Irish ancestry on my father’s side - enough to get me dual nationality and hence an EU passport. Irish passports are like gold dust in the U.K. now. I plan to retire to mainland Europe.

Hello everybody :)

My name is Larissa, I am 29 years old, and I joined this forum mainly for my academic research but will probably stay here since I am very interested in everything military. My husband is a U.S. Army combat veteran and I myself am considering the military as a career path right now. I am originally from Austria, but in the process of moving to the U.S.
I am hoping to find some people here that are willing to help with my research, but also looking forward to interesting discussions and conversations. Thanks for having me
