F-35 - International Participation

I have no real current idea what Italians are up to next - not reading/understanding the Italian language is not helpful so have to rely on English websites mostly. I'll look though.... Here Is Italy’s First F-35B Lightning II Flying In Full Italian Navy Markings For The First Time Today Still early days for Italian F-35Bs with CAVOUR undergoing necessary modifications (another look up task). Italy Is Prepping Its Only Aircraft Carrier to Handle F-35B Stealth Fighters 2023 op date with CAVOUR ready for them before then.

HMS Queen Elizabeth, first SRVL, comparisons

Thanks SpazSinbad for the links

I will pay particular interest with what Italy does with the F35 B off the Cavour and potentially the new LHD Trieste.
I'm sure South Korea and Japan will be taking note as well.

Belgium is a very politically divided country, to the extent, last I heard, French is required in all legal transactions in one part of Belgium, but forbidden in the other so I'm not surprised the announcement is delayed or somewhat muted. Most likely the incredibly expensive, more expensive than any other jet ever F35 is cheaper than Tiffy however.

F-35 for Belgiques in a 'supposedly rigged' competition. Gawd the internet is silly. :)

"Prime Minister Charles Michel’s government said despite a strong desire to support European allies, the F-35 was cheaper for Belgium over the long term, coming in 600 million euros ($684.54 million) under what the government budgeted for." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-a...-f-35-over-eurofighter-on-price-idUKKCN1MZ1S0

Perhaps BELGIUM is now in the F-35A mix? Why are they so coy? Apparently the gubmint is figuring out how to tell their public. Geez it is difficult in the days of 'leaky news'.

Belgium seen picking Lockheed F-35 over Eurofighter | Reuters THEN:

Belgium chooses Lockheed's F-35 over Eurofighter: Belga | Reuters

APPEARS? Belgium reportedly picks F-35 for future fighter jet

Given Europes history of fighter purchases, the idea of a competition being rigged isn't totally silly - Lockheed had an entire section of law created just for them after the F-104 sales to most of Europe :)

I'll guess the F-104 sales were BEFORE the internet and computers and military networks? Very difficult to tell FIBS and RIG things these days I reckon. How many eyes perused the Belgian competition. RIGGED? Nope. The F-104 story is a lot more complicated than just rigging whatever was rigged. I riggen. :)

Some pics of QUEEN ELIZABETH doing her current DT-2 stuff have been released by the RN.

Here's a couple. :)

First, a great dusk view aft, showing the most excellent digital notice board for flight deck crew on the Flyco island and, second, some of the USN crew doing flight deck duty. The latter embarked via the Integrated Test Team at NAS Patuxent River (ie both UK and US personnel, both mil and civ).

Via E-mail - the 'solid' air will help streamline the STELF over time (noted attribute of the F-35 - stealth gets better with flying usage) [quote source on request]. Singing in the rain.

Japan has gone for more or extra F-35Bs for a converted IZUMO probably. Noice. Eventually the penny will drop in Oz. :)

Japan, F-35Bs for Izumo carriers, official

The penny dropped and bounced years ago. The Izumos are ASW carriers, The Canberras are LHDs. While it's possible to operate F-35B s from them, we have a steep enough learning curve getting them to operate at full capacity doing the tasks they were purchased to fulfill. I am prepared to bet that absent an enormous change in the risks we face there will be no serious consideration of buying F-35B until at least a few years after F-35A reaches FOC. And even then the argument will be about replacing our F-18Fs which have a different role. No politician will be willing to justify the extra billions to provide an extra (very valuable but not urgent) capability unless they are looking to lose their seat

'LOSE THEIR SEAT'? WOW you really have it in for them eh. I think it is remarkable the reaction to such a comment comes with such alacrity and alarum on this forum. Calm down. I have at length in the appropriate forum thread expressed my opinion. I know I should not scare the horses but I just could not resist a throwaway line.

Raises many questions.
When will they be acquired.
How many.
How long will it take to have an operational capability.
What modifications will need to be done to the Izumo Class
What about the Hyuga class ( Size ?)
What will the neighbours think.
Will South Korea follow with their two ( Almost ) Dokdu Class.
Will this help drop the price of the F35B?
Will the F35B club get bigger - Now US Marines, Uk ,Italy, Japan. Tomorrow?????????

Japan going with the F35B sets a precedent that many sitting on the edge will watch with intent interest to see the challenges and progress of this acquisition
If Japan makes a success of this capability, I'm confident many will follow and many may also regret not having made the same choice.

This is an important decision not limited to Japan.
One to follow with interest.

I'm not too sure what an LHD stands for?
I think it was something from the 1970's denoting a capability limiting a class of ships to helicopters only which was never the case for the USN.
A better term would of been a LAD, with the A being for aviation, giving a more general term for both fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
The old Harrier from back in the day was a bit of a threat to the big fleet carriers, so it didn't make for good politics having an aircraft that enabled a push for smaller ( Budget ) carriers. We had to live with LHD. Politically safe.
Problem is LHD is not just a term today it's a culture. Which is limiting as it permeates a mind set of expectation.
We have this today with the Canberra class......A fixation of limiting the ship to an amphibious role only.

I would speculate their were many reasons the Juan Carlos 1 was chosen over the Mistral Class when the ADF selected a future LHD.
I'd suggest some fixed wing future proofing would not have hurt the decision.

I like the fact Spain Called the Juan Carlos a Strategic Projection Vessel.................. by another name a LAD.

Actually the decision is a purely Japanese domestic one and if Beijing are going to spit the dummy and throw all their toys out of the cot, they should have thought of the consequences before escalating tensions within the area. Arrogance is unbecoming of a nation attempting to portray itself as being friendly. It's reputation for being somewhat careless with facts, international law, agreements it has signed, basic human rights and freedoms etc., does precede it.

Other neighbours, especially South Korea, should note that modern Japan is not the nation it was 1890 - 1945. They need to build a bridge and get over it because they need to work closely with Japan to help preserve their independence from China. Japan needs to unreservedly apologise for all wrongs it committed 1890 - 1945 to clear the air and start afresh because it needs neighbours, especially South Korea, to help preserve it's independence from China and Russia. Yes, I know difficult to achieve because of loss of face etc., long memories and domestic politics, but a very necessary step.

South Korea may follow suit but this will depend on how things play out with the situation between the two Koreas and how much meddling occurs from outsiders with common borders to the north. Both China and Russia do not want a united Korea under a pro western South Korean leadership and they will do their utmost to prevent that happening. They would probably agree to a denuclearised Korean Peninsula but with either two Korean States or a united Korea either under a pro Chinese and / or Russian govt (preferably puppet) or a strictly non aligned (preferably client) state.

Call it whatever you like, you very well know it is about the intended role. Call a dog a cat, and it is still a dog, so unless the Government changes its position you can dream the LHD's to be whatever floats your boat. This circular argument has been going on this forum for over 10 years, we have heard it all, discussed it all and proposed it all dozens of times.

It is an LHD and that is its role as per the direction of the Government, current ORBAT and Conops
