Pakistan Air Force [PAF] News and Discussions

Does anybody got info regarding PAF's J-10 deal? Is it still being negotiated or finalised?? If finalised when and how many J-10s will PAF be inducting.
intially PAF will be inducting only 36 J-10s. however the number is expected to rise to around 80 according to unofficial reports.

the first of the J-10s will arrive by early 2009.

it all depends on the AL-31FN issue

if russia does not backstab pakistan, then all of the 36 will be inducted before 2010.

I think you need a history lesson. The answer in one word is
AFGHANISTAN
AND

What afghanistan? What have you done for Russia except being a launching pad for all the mujahiddins in the world.
I strongly urge members to get back to discussion of the Pakistan Air Force, and away from this nation doesn't like/has a grudge towards that nation or comments regarding one country backstabbing another country. Such comments tend to be biased depending on ones point of view and often had little to do with the actual topic of discussion.

I don't think AL-31FN will be an issue due to the fact that FC-1s provided to PAF already have Russian engines.

Of course it would! Something that the PAF has waited for so long and now when the opportunity knocks, you expect PAF to just sit back and let it pass? Funds will be made available, that is one thing for sure.

Mod Warning: amitluvslca; This is not your childish forum where you can come & use unwelcoming/inappropriate langague. If you havent got anything better to say than posting flaming, useless oneliners (which btw are not allowed on this forum) than you better not post at all. You have been warned.

I wasn't aware that a completely finished plane has been already delivered to PAF?
Well the point I was trying to make was that Russia didn't object the Sale of JF-17 with russian engine to PAF, so J-10 with russian engine shouldn't be a problem. So far no J-10 has been sold to Pak.

yeah funds will be made available but u hv got to beg a bit to the americans...:eek:nfloorl:

That depends on what agreements in contract have been made regarding the export of AL-31FN engine by China. The contract on RD-93 does not bar China from selling it (on board JF-17) to any country including Pakistan.
If contract allows China to sell it to any country (including Pakistan) than it wont be problem.

Since China has marketed it to Pakistan & Pakistan in return has shown not only interest but willingness to purchase J-10, I am guessing that the contract with Russia allows China to export it to any country including Pakistan. But we have to follow the development of WS-10A as well.

Dont worry about it, he has been warned. Next time he'll be recommended for the "Ban".

Pakistan Air Force Chooses MBDA Spada 2000 Air Defence System

Pakistan Air Force has ordered number of MBDA Spada 2000 air defence system to to meet the requirements of its low to medium air defence system.

It is likely that these systems will replace the long aged French Crotale air defence systems in Pakistan Air Force which have served well for the protection of Pakistan Air Space from enemy's intrusion.

Componenets of MBDA Spada 2000 were displayed in International Defence Exhibition, IDEAS in 2006 which attracted the attention of Pakistan defence staff.

MBDA Spada 2000 has been evaluating ever since and was in hard competition with Raytheon SL-AMRAAM and German Diehl BGT IRIS-t SL air defence systems.

Pakistan has more than adequate coverage for low level air defence due to large number of MANPADs available to the units Anza MK1, MK2, MK3 which Pakistan produces locally.

Former Air Chief Kaleem Sadaat did mention Pakistan Air Force interest in the Spada 2000 air defence system in the past, however it was up until now limited to it.

The Spada 2000 is an all-weather, day and night, highly automated, air defence system which has quick reaction time and requires very few operators to man the system. The system can engage up to 4 targets simultaneously, and has the track range of 60KM while it can intercept a target at 25KM accurately.

PAF, I've corrected the link above. Please don't link from a site which has basically ripped/cloned DT over the past year.

Report: Pakistan Eyeing French Weaponry

By JOHN LEICESTER – 9 hours ago
PARIS (AP) — Pakistan is trying to buy French missiles and radar for a jet fighter it is developing with China, a defense journal said Thursday, and experts warned that such a deal risked the technology falling into Chinese hands despite a European arms embargo on China.
Pakistan is talking to France about obtaining air-to-air missiles from the MBDA company and radars from Thales for its version of the JF-17 warplane, Jane's Defense Weekly said in a report posted on its Internet site.
Those missiles and similar radars also equip Taiwan's French-built Mirage fighters, and the island's weapons systems could be compromised if Pakistan transferred the technology to China, Jane's said.
The journal cited unidentified Russian and Chinese sources as saying the French sale to Pakistan was "likely" to go ahead.
A spokesman for MBDA initially said it was bidding to supply systems for the Pakistani jet, but later retracted his statement, saying he had been misinformed. Thales declined to comment, and French government officials would not discuss whether a deal was in the works.
China regards U.S.-allied Taiwan as part of its territory, although the island has ruled itself since breaking away in 1949 as communist forces won control of the mainland. Their tense relationship is one of the world's most closely watched potential sources of conflict.
Alexander Neill, head of the Asia program at the Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies in England, said he anticipated a "quite vicious" reaction from the United States if France proceeded with the reported sale.
He said there were "valid" concerns that China could get its hands on the technology, because "Pakistan is building a very solid relationship with China."
A look at the French technology could allow Chinese engineers to counter it, possibly affecting the delicate military balance between China and Taiwan, said Paul Smyth, head of aerospace studies at the institute.
"There's no doubt that having access to that would be significant," he said.
Pakistan reportedly let Chinese engineers look at U.S. military equipment in the past, and experts said permitting examination of the French technology would circumvent a European Union ban on arms sales to China in place since the Chinese army crushed democracy protests in 1989.
The experts said the embargo has become increasingly porous and France has lobbied for it to be lifted.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy, elected in May, has yet to say where he stands on the issue but may do so when he visits China later this year, his spokesman David Martinon said Thursday.

This issue has been discussed before. So i don't really want to get into it as it will turn into a "This VS That" tread. Everyone has their own views.

Well, if the French win the 'bid' to supply the missiles and the radar to PAF for Jf-17, they probably will go ahead. As the above article points out correctly, France has been itching to have the arms embargo on China lifted. Who knows if they consider it OK to have Pakistan let Chinese engineers look at their tech, maybe for a bit inflated price tag on the equipment? Searches me..

France certainly needs some export orders, if not of the complete aircrafts than at least of avionics. If they aren't scared that Technology of Agosta-90B & the Merlin & Scorpion Subs they were offering, would fall in the Chinese hands than this is no problem either. I don't see why the big fuss when US it self is selling F-16s & other weapons to Pakistan.

i don't see what's the big deal here. Pakistan is opening a bid for the second batch of JF-17. France is one of the contacted countries. A few month back, Selex was rumoured a the one that Pakistan was going for. We hear stuff like this every few months. And I've got about as much faith in JDW for Chinese related stuff as I do with kanwa.

Selex is working on AESA radar. If Pakistan installs AESA radar on JF-17, then it would become a much more potent aircraft.
China does have AESA technology(at least on their warships), wonder why they haven't developed one for aircrafts ...:unknown

French arms deal with Pakistan risks US ire
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/South_Asia/IJ10Df01.html
In addition to F-16s, PAF operates French made Mirages, which Taiwan also has (albeit different variants). It's a small world! If India can get Israeli, American, and Russian military technology, by the same measure Pakistan may get French, American, and Chinese military technology.
Saudi Arabia and Egypt have Chinese missiles, while both nations operate American and European and/or Russian made fighters. Malaysia has both US F-18s & Russian made MiG-29s, ordered Su-30 MKM, while she enjoys good relations with China.
Su-30 MKM Based on the MKI, a highly specialised version for Malaysia with the same platform but a French, Russian and South African combination of avionics. It will feature head-up displays (HUD), navigational forward-looking IR system (NAVFLIR) and Laser Designation pod (LDP Damocles) from Thales Group of France, missile approach warning sensor (MAWS) and laser warning sensor (LWS) from AVITRONICS company of South Africa, as well as the Russian BARS NIIP N011M AESA radar, electronic warfare (EW) system, optical-location system (OLS) and a glass cockpit. ..
The first 2 Su-30MKMs were formally handed over in Irkutsk on 23 May 2007, later arrived in Gong Kedak airbase on 21 June. Another two will be delivered by the end of 2007. Full squadron of 18 aircraft will be operational by the end of 2008. As part of the deal, the Russians will send a Malaysian astronaut to the ISS.

The article is filled with 'ifs' and 'buts'. There is not much ground to what he is basing his analysis on. One rumor about an F-16 being 'closely examined' by China isn't enough to come up with a barrage of zero-sum arguements.
