Iran’s defense minister says that newly enhanced surface-to-surface missiles have been delivered to the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard.
General Ahmad Vahidi says the development of a new version of the Fateh-110 missile shows Western sanctions against Tehran have been ineffective. He gave no indication Tuesday of the capabilities of the upgraded Fateh-110, but said further work is being done to add to its range and accuracy.
In August, Iran announced what it called a successful test firing of a new, longer-range Fateh-110. Vahidi said the solid-fuel missile had a more precise navigation and control system, allowing it to hit targets with greater precision.
Iran’s announcements of new military technology come a time when the country is facing increased international pressure concerning its nuclear program. Tehran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
Iranian officials also said recently that production had begun on missile-equipped speedboats and a long-range drone (pilotless) aircraft that could carry bombs.
