Voice of America, Outgoing Bolivian president Eduardo Rodriguez has dismissed the chief of the army over the destruction of at least 28 surface-to-air missiles.
Mr. Rodriguez told reporters late Tuesday he had relieved General Marcelo Antezana of his duties.
The firing came amidst a growing controversy over who in the government was responsible for sending the 28 aging, Chinese-made missiles to the United States to be dismantled last year. Mr. Rodriguez has said he authorized destroying the missiles, but not shipping them to the United States.
A U.S. State Department spokesman last month denied charges of a secret, U.S.-led operation to remove the missiles from Bolivia. He said Bolivia had requested help destroying them, in line with an international effort to regulate that type of weapon.
The dismissed army chief had recently called for the release of more information on the affair.
