, WASHINGTON: The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Greece of M26A2 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems Extended Range Rocket Pods as well as associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $63 million.

The Government of Greece has requested a possible sale of 299 M26A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) extended range rocket pods (six rockets per pod) with M101 grenades, 1 MLRS Extended Range Rocket, U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics services, spare and repair parts, personnel training and training equipment, publications and technical data, support equipment, maintenance support of repairable material and other related elements of program support. The estimated cost is $63 million.

This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by improving the military capabilities of Greece and further weapon system standardization and interoperability with U.S. forces.

Greece needs these MLRS pods in order to defend their borders. This proposed sale will enable the Greek Army to continue developing a defensive area fire capability to counter hostile long range artillery and rocket systems as well as enhance its interoperability with U.S. forces. The systems will be provided in accordance with, and subject to the limitation on use and transfer provided under the Arms Export Control Act, as amended, and as embodied in the Letter of Offer and Acceptance.

Greece, which already has MLRS extended range pods in its inventory, will have no difficulty absorbing the additional pods.

This proposed sale will not adversely affect either the military balance in the region or U.S. efforts to encourage a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus questions.

The prime contractor will be Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control at Dallas, Texas. The purchaser has requested offsets; however, agreements are undetermined and will be defined in negotiations between the purchaser and contractor.

Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional U.S. Government or contractor representatives to Greece.

There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.

This notice of a potential sale is required by law; it does not mean that the sale has been concluded.
