Russian aerospace heavyweights, MiG and Irkut Corporation, are to roll out the latest cutting edge defence technology at the Dubai air show this month with the MiG-29SMT multifunctional combat aircraft due to demonstrate its prowess in the daily flying display.

'The appearance of the MiG-29SMT could prove to be a highlight of the show as is often the case when the Russians take to air show skies,' said Charles Alcock, Editor of the leading aerospace trade publication Aviation International News.

'The SMT was launched only last year and is most advanced upgrade of the celebrated MiG-29 fighter.'

MiG claims its SMT is capable of precision weapons application on aerial, sea and ground targets. The MiG-29SMT, due in Dubai, will also feature the new Zhuk-ME multimode radar, open architecture of avionics based on MIL-STD-1553B bus military standards, a multi-channel navigation system and a new fuel system which allows for in-flight refuelling and longer flight range.

'This new MiG has a host of improved, compatible technology that makes it more appealing to a wider audience,' said Alexey Fedorov, Director General – Designer General, MiG. 'It is able to successfully compete with the most up-to-date fighters.'

Two SMTs will be at Dubai 2005, the ninth international aerospace exhibition, one will be based in the static park, the other will take part in the daily flying display. They company will also showcase the latest MiG 29 simulators.

Meanwhile, Irkut Corporation, the fastest developing company in the Russian Aerospace industry, is also bringing an impressive cache of its aircraft to this year's show, to be showcased as mock-ups, including the Su-30 MKI combat aircraft, Be-200 Amphibian, Yak-130 Advanced Combat Training Aircraft and its family of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).

Irkut's flagship Su-30 MKI, which is already in service with the Indian Air Force and will be delivered to the Royal Malaysian Air Force in 2007, will be promoted at Dubai 2005. The fighter boasts a host of new advancements, such as AL-31FP thrust vector control engine, phased array BARS-radar and an internationally compatible avionics suite, which provides for an integration of additional equipment and weapons to ensure sound upgrade potential.
