Russian Air Force News & Discussion

There are those in the west who claim that the thrust vectoring capability looks very nice at airshows but has no tactical use in combat, especially aerial combat. However the Russians have different CONOPS to the US military, RAF etc., and they aren't as enamoured with long range engagement as the USAF / USN, being quite happy with a merge and knife fight if the opportunity presents itself. That's where they see thrust vectoring as giving them an advantage. They also use it to shorten landing and take off distances. I gleaned all of this from the three videos on the Su-57, two of which were posted by @Ananda in post #1,925 and the video I posted in my post #1938.There's a few big ifs in the Su-75 Checkmate program, with the biggest being will Sukhoi deliver on what it's promised? Time will tell.

However the concept itself isn't silly and one that probably should be seriously considered in the west, most likely the US. Take the current technology from the F-35 and utilise it for a 5th generation light fighter. There is no need to invent any new technologies because you would be acquiring MOTS and COTS to build it. Costs can be reduced by building a digital twin. Something to think about.
The Russian thrust vectoring technology is contrary to low observability from behind and this is one of the arguments against it. If I understand correctly, the F-22 has some thrust vectoring which is 2-directional unlike the Russian 360 degree thrust vectoring, but the F-22 also has very low observability from behind unlike the Russian Su-57. So the choice in this trade off seems based on tactical doctrine.

Personally, I think an F16V might be sufficient to fill the niche, but alas, this is the Russian Air Force thread. ;-)
I spend some time after work to scan photos, articles, videos on this planes. Whether in this threads or other forums and on line sources. This plane really creating large buzz on defense media and enthusiats Internationally.

What I can sense the aim on this Fighthers:
1. Provide more economical 5th gen (at least Russian approach on 5 th gen),
2. Create export attractions (from Russia traditional customers), since they know Su-57 it's just to costly for most of them,
3. Provide light aircraft with enough capabilities on taking potential adversaries latest generations. At least on the defense area that still relatively manageable.
4. With economics stand point and technological packages that can be put on, it's hope to make this aircraft more available and operable toward widespread operational AB.

Thus basically, it's 21st century Mig 21 or F-16 A/B.

You've got to hand it to the Russians - they know how to make nice looking jets. This has to be some sort of record though, because if I didn't know better I'd say they've managed the impossible - taken the X-32 and made it look downright pretty :p ;)

According to Fox news the Checkmate can fly at 2c - twice the speed of light. Now according to Einstein's Theory of Relativity that's not possible and modern science accepts that at the moment because it hasn't yet been disproven. That's why relativity is a theory and not a law. Anyway such basicscientific facts as that wouldn't concern Fox, or most of the modern media in the slightest.

|"While the Kh-59MKM airframe retains the same airframe dimensions as the earlier Kh-59MK, the absence of a seeker section has enabled the inclusion of a heavier warhead, a KTRV spokesperson told Janes ."|

As a TV-guided missile it should have some kind of daylight camera/seeker, right?

It's been a bad week for Russian pilots. A Be-200 firefighting aircraft belonging to the MoD crashed in Turkey while on loan fighting the wildfires there. And the Il-112 prototype crashed. In each case the pilots died. R.I.P.

For the Il-112V this is another black mark in an already deeply problematic program plagued with technical difficulties, delays, and cost overruns. Nonetheless it's quite likely the program will forge ahead, probably with a corrected timetable, since there isn't really an alternative.

For the Be-200, the type has actively been loaned out (rented out really) to many countries around the world including Indonesia, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Israel. So far there was only one previous incident involving the type, where it clipped the trees while fighting fire in Portugal, but the aircraft managed to land safely. The aircraft so far has only had one foreign operator ("foreign" really, it's Azerbaijan) though a contract was allegedly signed with China back in 2017, and negotiations are on-going with a number of other countries.

Yes, I saw video last night of the IL-112V crash. It appears to be an out of control starboard engine fire that may have found its way into a fuel tank. Crew didn't stand a chance. To low to bail out if they were wearing chutes, so had to ride it in. May they RIP.

Didn't a company in the US place orders for 6 BE200's?

Checkmate promotional video prepared for Dubai Airshow 2021. Basically shown Checkmate is to solve your problem from handling UCAV toward US 5th gen.

Update.

An Orion UAV with satellite comms is being developed.

A new factory is being built at Dubna for mass-production of UAVs.

Some new UAV types have been shown off at recent exercises. One appears to be a mass-produced version of the traditional grenade-dropping tactical UAV. One is called the Merlin-VR, the other is the Lastochka.

A new SAM, the S-550 is under development. What kind of system it will be remains unclear, possibly an S-400 upgrade or follow-on system.

The first brigade of S-500 missiles has entered service. The exact composition remains questionable, and I can't help but wonder - why brigade? Why not a btln?

A new IADS drone target training system called Adjutant is entering serial production.

Another Il-76MD-90A has been produced. This is the 14th aircraft including prototypes, and the Il-78M-90A prototype.

The first upgraded Su-30SM has taken off.

The second Tu-160M has taken off. Note this is an upgrade of existing airframes.

A shot of the A-100 prototype in flight.

So they have finally got around to putting hi-ratio bypass turbofans on the IL-76. It's something that they should've done in the 1980s.

First Tu-160M2 assembled in Kazan.

It hasn't flown yet, but it looks like Russians were able to solve whatever manufacturing challenges they faced in forming the large titanium hull parts in their argon chamber(s?). That is, they seem to have restored the once lost Soviet technology that was key to manufacturing the Tu-160s.

МО РФ: серийный контракт на поставку беспилотника С-70 будет заключен в течение полугода - Армия и ОПК - ТАСС (tass.ru)

MOSCOW, December 14. /tass/. The serial contract for the supply of the latest Russian strike drone (UAV) S-70 "Okhotnik" will be concluded within six months. This was stated on Tuesday by Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexey Krivoruchko on the Rossiya-24 TV channel.

"Today, the complex is already quite seriously ready for mass production. I would like to add that in the near future we will already conclude a serial contract for the supply of these vehicles [S-70 Okhotnik drones]. These vehicles are still test vehicles, but within six months we will conclude a serial contract ahead of the delivery of these unmanned vehicles, " he said.

Two great news is that the flat nozzle for production seems to be as promised like it was on maks 2019 airshow and we will now know the order number in 6 months. To me the PAK-DA is now rather pointless because you have an all aspect stealth drone with a 6000km range, short range air to air missile capabilities, and a possible carrier for the internal hypersonic air to ground missiles the Larva-MD. Also there the modernized long range long missile stand off Tu-160Ms make it more pointless that I would rather have the next Russian state fund go fund the PAK-DP instead.

My next dream coming up is the UAE having both the F-35 and Sukhoi LTS unless the U.S. feels the need to go pull out again which I wouldnt recommend of how that looks to the public eye.

Thank you for sharing.

Thats a nice looking creature...
And at last we can see the new stealthy exhaust nozzle.

But still i can not believe that this UCAV can operate from an LHD like Project 23900.

The UAE has suspended F35 talks with the US, they also inked an order with the French for 80 Rafale's.

Sadly this article doesn't any explanation about the reason, just a "in a rare dispute between Washington and a key U.S. ally in the Persian Gulf."

Maybe those 78 F-16E/F Block and 80 Rafales are already more than the UAEAF can handle.

Edit.
Sorry, i just found this.

darn hope they change their mind on the F-35 soon with guarantees from china being offered so they can still possess both different kinds of 5th gens.

Apparently it has to do with certain guarantees the U.S. is seeking with regards to the U.A.E. making sure the Chinese don't get any access and certain things the U.A.E. insists on but still remains uncertain if it will get. As part of America's policy of ensuring that Israel retains an edge; there will be segments in the U.S. which will oppose the deal or will insist that the U.A.E. gets its F-35s but with certain changes.

Others in the U.S. are opposed to the deal on grounds that the U.A.E. has 'misbehaved' in Yemen. I have no idea how true it is but it was reported somewhere that Israel voiced no objections [even though it's a matter between the U.S. and U.A.E.]over the deal. In the past objections by Israel and it's lobby in the U.S. lead to delays in Saudi getting its E-3s.
