My god my eyes and ears are now destroyed. I just spent 20 minutes watching Sean Edwards and Steven Conroy talking about subs....

they get things out of context and don't even realise it.

shoot me now

I'm 30 mins behind you in current death throws. Sadly the ALP seems incapable of muzzling Conroy from regurgitating idiocy. Where is their integrity?

the best thing they could do is get someone else as shadow defmin... he is patently hopeless and obviously has no idea about what Lab did with subs on their watch....

As for Edwards. FMD, please don't let him near any of the Defence or Security councils...

Conroy is no Faulkner or Combet by any margin.

Combet was probably Labors greatest loss, intelligent, technically qualified professional a real cut above the usual law, commerce, arts and politics graduates both sides foist on us. He was across his brief in every portfolio he held, a rare thing, especially in defence. I wonder if he got out because he was sick of it or rather because Labor didn't want to have the same issue as the Liberals, a minister who was both more capable and better liked than the anointed leader.

I missed Conroys performance as its school holidays and I was watching Pan with the kids, probably a more informative and intellectual experience than listening to Conroy anyway.

Much to my surprise, I have the greatest respect for John Faulkner.
He seemed to be a decent and intelligent man, not naturally in tune with defence matters, who rose to the occasion when made Defence Minister.
I have no idea how he was perceived by defence insiders.

Conroy is a congenital idiot - way out of his depth. Just goes to show how far Shorten has to stoop to protect his position

Edwards is just embarassing.

I despair when I see the calibre of people that get elected to the parlt.

There are days when I wish we had a Praetorian Guard who could just stroll into the Senate and evict the babbling gaggle of oxygen thieves taking our hard earned readies....

Highly regarded - as he was brutal when in the Senate, but defended and protected Defence when he got the job - and he didn't suffer fools

I'd argue that no one in the current Lab front row has the intellect and/or capability of either Faulkner or Combet.

Smith was hopeless, he treated people with contempt, behaved badly in general - and all because he elected to throw the emotional toys out of the cot when he didn't get DFAT over Rudd

Thanks for the side-by-side. Contrasting differences IMV, both the paint job and the upgrade.

Not sure I'm a fan of the new colours. For some reason in reminds me of European Navy's (Germany in particular)
Apparently the RAN are examining the Kiwi engine upgrade of their Anzacs. I understand further upgrades of the RAN Anzacs are due in 2018 so it may be this will be part of the programme.

A naval question, then.

Are there any indications of when Australia will make a new decision on replenishment ships? I understand you had a closed process, inviting bids from Navantia and DSME. How far has this progressed?

NZ had a tender that closed in June. Janes recently reported that the potential suppliers had been reduced to two - DSME and Hyundai. They are at the Best And Final Offer stage, meaning a decision is likely in early 2016 (or possibly earlier).

Naval support vessels from South Korea [DSEi15D3] - IHS Jane's 360

With DSME being shortlisted by both nations, I suppose there is potential for us to end up with customised variants of the same platform, presumaby the Aegir.
I hope the RAN don't make a decision based on cost alone. We have Navantia ships in the fleet and commonality of systems must play a part in the decision making process. I understand a decision by the RAN is due before the end of the year?

The Cantabria has splendid lines and reminds me of the Success. The Aegir is just plain fugly

Oh please let's not get into basing our acquisitions on looks, Remind's me of the American bloke that had issues with the modern helmet being a 'Nazi helmet' The New Helmets That American War Fighters Wear Are Very Displeasing. - WWII General - WWII Forums

In regards as to which will be picked, Well I dont have any idea. Both have there good point's but sadly our fleet is only large enough to really support the acquisition of a single type.

thats the kind of comment that beancounters, fiscally influenced consultants to PMO, Treasury and Finance enjoy....

there are some self motivated shipyards who have been pushing the single class cost saving solution as well.....

to paraphrase .... OPV's do not an AWD make :)

I actually asked the question about systems commonality with the Aegir verses the Cantabria back in 2012 and the answer was quite simple, fit the Aegir with all the required common systems. It is a very flexible design that can be tailored to the specific requirements of any customer navy using any systems desired with minimal impact on cost or schedule.

Are there any Aegir ships operating with Navies around the world today? Cost appears to be a strong motivating factor for the RN. Ditto the Kiwis who appear to be keen on the ship.

Interestingly, the Cantabria may be chartered to operate with the RCN. We know the RCN has chosen the Berlin Class which appears also to be a fine class of ship.

RFA Tidespring, the first Aegir-class vessel to be constructed, is afloat at the DSME shipyard in South Korea, and is scheduled to be delivered to the UK later this year for fit-out with radar and other systems. There are no Aegir ships currently in service, as Tidespring is the first of five currently under order (4 x UK, 1 x Norway)

There is some more detailed info at the ink below, but I have struggled to get the PDFs to load.

I viewed the Feb2015 news file and the pictures of the ship's construction are impressive.

Dose anyone know if the new Seahawks have ability to remove their dipping sonar to free up space in the aircraft when not needed. I've read the nh90 version had that ability and that Sikorsky spoke about that being an option. Did that end up happening?

I don't think the 1400 will take any of our current helicopters.
The 1800 on the other hand, should, and has a better endurance / range.

Apparantly future helicopter capabilty calls for both manned and unmanned and ADF has shown interest in the MQ8C Fire Scout. If and it's a big if we did go for the damen 1400 according to the brochure it has a flight deck capabilty of 6000kg which is the max take off weight of MQ-8C but that leaves no room for expansion at a later date. Scuttlebutt has pointed towards something like the Damen 2400 which would give us a future growth path
