Navantia was invited to participate in international competition for the Russian helicopter carrier

14/09/2009 (Infodefensa.com) Moscow - Spanish shipyards Navantia have been invited to participate in an international competition that will convene for the acquisition of Russian helicopter carrier, which also chooses the French company DCNS, including posting as commander Russian Navy Vladimir Visotski.

"I confirm that negotiations are held (on purchase of helicopter carrier), but I think it will open a competition," said a media Visotski in Kaliningrad, Russian city on the Baltic Sea, RIA Novosti reported.

According to the Russian Admiral, several countries have knowledge of, and "may participate in the contest both France and Holland and Spain," as long as you're willing to transfer technology for building such a vessel.

In this sense, Visotski said the United States stayed on the sidelines of the negotiations "for obvious reasons" and, in particular, stressed that Washington is "very sensitive" about the transfer know-how to other countries.

Visotski noted that the new ship will increase the combat capability of the Russian Navy. "Take for instance what happened in Georgia in August last year. This will ship in 40 minutes what was done in 26 hours on that occasion," he noted.

Navantia and its LHD

The construction of modern ships LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) is a specialty of Navantia which currently has manufacturing designs for Spain and Australia. In the Spanish case, this is the vessel Juan Carlos I, with a displacement of 27,100 tons larger than the French Mistral (21,500).
The LHD Juan Carlos I, launched in March last year in Ferrol, has a large capacity tanks and cargo holds as well as a wide 202x32 flight deck of aircraft and helicopters.

At the same time, the company that now runs Aurelio Martinez also won the international competition held in Australia for the purchase of two vessels of this type, defined in Spain as a Strategic Projection Ship.

With an initial investment of 360 million euros, the Juan Carlos I has 230 meters, an allocation of 243 staff and has a capacity to transport 1200 for amphibious operations or military of any kind.

France introduced the Mistal

The now three-September, the French Defense Ministry confirmed its interest in participating in bidding for the amphibious assault helicopter carrier with service that exists in its infancy, the Mistral class of the public company DCNS.

Russia shows interest in our helicopter carrier. The application is now a general, "said ministry spokesman Laurent Teisseire.

The French Navy helicopter carrier currently has two of that kind, Mistral and tonnere. Its total price is about 600 million euros.

Multipurpose Vessel

During the summer, the head of the Russian General Staff Nikolai Makarov, said that for the first time, the Russian Navy will bring to tender the purchase of a helicopter carrier design, construction of which is joint. Advancement to the initial requirements are for three or four units.

According to Makarov, the helicopter carrier that requires Moscow to be a multi-purpose vessel designed to address a variety of missions from transporting helicopters, amphibious operations, troop transport and even serve as a command post for staff to drive operations.

The latter met the JCI perfectly! :D

I don't know if the US will support the russians getting a JC1. I would imagine there is a fair bit of US input, systems or rights in the design given it evolved from the sea control ship concept.

JC1 is a fantastic ship for this catorgory. Maybe too good.

Skijump, longish, design to handle heavy fixed wing aircraft. I wonder if russia could launch any sort of fixed wing off it.

Its an LHD with a Ski jump, what makes you think its got any relation to the Sea control ship concept? Did the Italian Government need any US say so when they sold the modified Cavour design to India? that's a small aircraft carrier with a secondary use as a LHD, JC1 is a LHD with a secondary use as an aircraft carrier.

I think the Russians seeking is primarily a carry helicopters and amphibious assault ship, which allows them to deploy many soldiers and tanks in a short time in a particular location.

if Russians are betting on a JCI I imagine it would install and weapons systems.
Spain has installed the system JCI SCOMBA a LANZA radar manufactured by INDRA, are some new Spanish systems.
JCI engines are Canadians with U.S. patent.
Could Russia or acquire these engines would have to install other?

I guess if you accept the JCI Russia would manufacture it to your specifications and requirements with transfer of technology, patented Navantia has many things such as welding system.

I will have to find a reference, although to be honest I think it was the JC1 predecessor that was distantly related the PdA..

The US is a whole lot friendlier with India than with Russia. US has sold many entire ex USN ships to India, at very low prices, haven't quiet extended the same offers to Russia.

Yeah i think that PdA was based of the sea control ship if you compare the drawings the hull is very close to that of the sea control ship

The US has sold so far 1 ship to india the INS JalAshwa which was the former USS Trenton. After US the top two contenders for a multipolar worl are russia and china which being the case IMHO the US will never offer any ships to either countries under current circumstances

Are the Spanish only going to build one JCI for themselves or are they planning on a second?
I think only one. They already have two fairly new LPDs, & a light carrier which is expected to be replaced with another carrier eventually.

From what I have read the Spanish plan to build another BPE or carrier in another ten or so years to replace PdA when she retires. The PdA still has a good number of years of life in her. At the moment they are building the two hulls for Australia, which should keep the shipyard busy for several years. And there is talk of possibly building more ships for others as well.

yes, the JCI is the only BPE that Spain will be built.

into service once the JCI is expected to step into the PDA to make some improvements, including new sensors and new radar LANZA-N.

people would like that the new PDA was a carrier based on the JCI but more dedicated to single aircraft carrier.

here I leave a picture of what could be an aircraft carrier based in the JCI:

http://media.photobucket.com/image/futuro% 20PDA% 20basado% 20in% 20the% 20JCI/MAC1966/PDA2_2.jpg

The idea is to use the keel and the concept of JCI to save money on design and engineering.
So yes! The new carrier would be lower profile and be only used for work with aircraft.

but that it remains a "wish" for there is nothing official. :mad3
