War Against ISIS

ISIS have released footage showing their drones dropping explosives on various targets.
The LTTE became the first terrorist organisation with an ''air force'' and now IS has become the first terrorist organisation with armed UAVs. I dread to think of what else they might do next.

The way there hitting ISIS is special because of how they doing it. This is testing ground for Russian forces and mercenary force.
''Special'' in what sense? And I don't mean using ''elite'' units which you're fond of mentioning but how is Russia hitting IS in a way that others aren't? The bulk of the ''boots on the ground'' [to use a cliche] are Syrian and contrary to the impression you gave in a previous post; the bulk of them are not ''elite'' but nonetheless they're doing most of the fighting. The size of the country makes it obvious that the Iranians and Hezbollah [as well as Russian advisors] can't be everywhere and that they still need the Syrians [despite most units not having the same tactical proficiency levels of Western armies] to hold ground and to fight back.

The thing to bear in mind is that despite losing a lot of ground IS is still not defeated. It still holds territory and it still is able to attract people to its cause. At present Russia appears to have gained some successes; it has weakened IS; it has ensured Assad is still in power despite Western attempts to see him gone and it has established itself as a major player in a region long dominated by the West but it really remains to be seen how well everything will turn for Russia. Like the U.S. which in the long run failed to achieved its major objectives in Iraq and Afghanistan; Syria could turn out to be the same for Russia.

ISIS have released footage showing their drones dropping explosives on various targets. Well, they obviously would not show the failures but let's just say ... there are a lot of good hits, many injuries. Thankfully their drones do not carry a bigger explosive.

First drone attack is even combined with a VBIED attack ...
this has been known for quite a while in mil circles, its only just hit the public domain

they have been targeting commanders in armoured vehicles.

The Kurds will be very wary; after all they've been courted and later abandoned by various countries before. Same goes with the FSA; their chief concern now is to wait and see how far Trump's policy over Syria will stray or differ from Obama's. One things's for sure; a U.S./Russia rapprochement based on common interests rather than rivalry or hyperbole will not be welcomed by some.

To date, Trump has criticised the EU and America's allies in Asia but he's been silent on Saudi and the other Gulf states. No surprises here as the U.S. has traditionally shied away from being publicly over critical of its Gulf allies; allies who've done a lot to make an already unstable region more unstable and who like Israel have done certain things that were detrimental to the U.S's interests. If Trump was really serious about putting America ''First'' he should start with reevaluating America's strategic partnership with its so called allies in the Gulf and with Israel.

Update.

Fighting around al-Bab continues as the SAA and Turks push to cut the ISIS forces off. Apparently ISIS is still trying to hold the city. Russia and Turkey are continuing joint airstrikes, and apparently Russia is providing not only interdiction but even battlefield CAS for the Turks. In one instance Russian jets accidentally hit Turkish positions killing 3 and wounding 11. It's important to note that the current configuration seems to leave al-Bab in Turkish hands after the dust settles. Erdogan already said that after al-Bab their next target is Raqqa, which implies they'll need to go through the Kurds to do it.

There has also been a brief fight between pro-Turkish fighters at the SAA, which cost the SAA at least one lost BMP and some killed and wounded. Overall however there doesn't seem to be any fighting.

Syria's newly trained 5th Army Corps is moving out towards T4. They will likely be pushing on Palmyra soon as part of the developing SAA offensive. It's equipped with BMP-1s, T-62Ms, and Vodnik armored cars. There are also unconfirmed reports of them having BTR-82As but those might belong to Russian military advisers. Finally, they may also be the recipients of a small batch of T-90 tanks.

There are reports of Russian Tochka missiles arriving in Syria. Quite a few should be available since almost all Russian missile bdes have been re-armed with Iskanders. There are even reports of some being used to strike targets in Idlib but Russia denies it.

Strikes in Idlib and Hama using aircraft are however confirmed. It looks like the most recent "ceasefire" only applies to "rebel" groups on the Turkish payroll. Additionally the Su-34s in Syria are being rotated again, and one of the Su-24Ms has reached 1000 combat sorties.

Update.

The assault on al-Bab continues but slowly and with no real results. Turkey has brought up super-heavy 203mm howitzers. Generally artillery of this caliber is uncommon. So far, since the Turks have been trying a frontal assault on al-Bab the biggest winners have been the SAA who took a number of towns and villages from ISIS without much opposition. Strangely enough, instead of completing the encirclement and meeting the SAA positions south-east of al-Bab, the Turks and their proxies are trying to assault Bzaa from the one side.

I know, but if they bought them, is that because their own are not good enough? Besides, that pattern isn't matching well with the terrain of ME & Syria in particular. The regular Russian combat/support units there wear desert patterned uniforms.

Ironically, some who are giving pep talks (not sure if they are Russians) wearing old NATO Woodland Camouflage pattern jackets! I have 1 just like that! I wonder if it's deliberate "to blend in" or they don't have enough of their own field uniforms? Could they be from captured rebels stocks supplied by Turkey or others?
Can be bought on the open market, as you know. Apply Ockham's razor.
It's the Syrian Army uniform. They don't have "their own one".

It seems they have 2 different patterns. 2 soldiers in the back with 3rd in the middle illustrate this:
Also 2 in sunglasses wear different patterns:

1 is NATO Woodland 100%! I won't be surprised if some corrupt Ukrainians supplied them to Syrians for hard currency while her own troops have shortage of good uniforms in the field!

So the rebels attack the regime forces in Daraa and then get backstabbed by ISIS? Poetic!

With the stalling of the turkish campaign, the steady Palmyra advance, the landgrab by the regime forces east of Kuweiris, the big pressure and landgrab by the kurds towards Raqqa, things are looking pretty good.

The rebels are fighting among themselves and are receiving less and less foreign support, while Russia and Iran stand by Assad. Al Sisi also expressed his support for the Assad government and syrian army.

This turn of events is the only way towards long term stability. There can also be a balance of powers in the region and everyone can save face.

What? Stop talking out of your ass. Have there been supplies of NATO woodland to Ukraine? Is there any evidence of significant quantities of uniforms moving between Ukraine and Syria? What kind of uniform did the Syrian army wear before this war? Start doing research before posting nonsense.

I was half joking, but there are many freelancers out there that can supply non-lethal aid such as surplus old pattern uniforms from anywhere to anywhere. We may not know all what's going on. Russia most probably supplied those to Syria, as they are cheap and similar to other patterns.

Update.

The SAA has taken Tadif south of al-Bab, and has linked up with the Kurds, meaning the only way the Turks can move on Raqqa is through Kurdish or Syrian held territory. Interestingly enough Turkey claims they will not leave Syria until they take Manbij. As of right now US SoF are still in Manbij so an immediate Turkish offensive seems unlikely. And of course this reveals the true goal of Euphrates Shield, if anyone still had doubts. They don't want a large Kurdish entity united to their south. Fighting ISIS to take al-Bab is the means to that end.

The SAA is about to begin its second assault on Palmyra. Russian advisers and TOS-1A artillery systems are present. It's important to note that the offensive is moving slowly, and the SAA is working hard to secure it's northern flank. The Syrian 5th Army Corps is definitely involved in this push but there appear to be other units involved as well. Russian attacks helos are providing CAS to the offensive.

There's an interesting shoulder patch on some of the soldiers of the 5th Army Corps. ISIS Hunters. This might suggest the primary purpose of the new formation.
