The BBC are reporting that the Syria Democratic Forces have stated that they have started the operation to attack and overrun Raqqa, the main stronghold of Daesh. This will not go down well with Erdogan and I wonder what the US will do if he decides to attack SDF forces, especially Kurdish forces, attacking Raqqa.

This will be especially interesting as US (and other) SOF are embedded into several SDF units. Imagine Turkish F-16s and Sabras wounding or killing NATO SOFs while pummeling Kurdish forces...

I have been waiting for a Kalibr barrage to begin the festivities. It is good timing now that the terrorists are massing forces from Idlib for another western Aleppo attack. Phase 3 of their offensive I guess this is? I am losing count.

USA is in turmoil, time to posture up a little more.

Some have speculated that under Trump; the U.S. will largely outsource the job of defeating IS to Russia and that here will be no more calls for Assad's removal. Others are of the opinion that despite what he may have said during his campaigning, that U.S. policy towards Syria will not undergo a major change. It also remains to be seen how he handles Turkey and the likes of Saudi Arabia and Qatar and the UAE.

I hope this bloody situations ends up shortly so the millions of Syrians going back their houses in the next few 5 years ...
International communities wanted to see Syrian civil war conflict resolve ASAP considering significant loss of civilian lives but with current trends of regional political-military dominance involving international and local military powers 5-years predicament resolution of conflict may be too short far from reality. Solution of crisis should have been achieved last year should Russian conformed to the agreement with US removing Assad from power in favor of moderate Syrian rebels. Now that Russia has strenghten military bases in Syria with extensive ground and aerial attack and with the participation of Iran, Hezbollah and other terrorist groups worsen Syrian conflict 10-times fold.

Funny. This is a litmus paper test for Donald Trump resolve of Show yrian conflict can be addressed as new US president. He is a non-traditional politician and has no clue on foreign affairs. I guess he is another version of Braxit.

I suspect his first decision will be who he sells out first. The only worthy players there are the Kurds and they will likely get screwed. As for the Gulf States, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, and Syria, letting them have at it may be the best solution. They are all a waste of space IMO.

The latest rebel push on Aleppo has been defeated decisively, and SAA counter-attacks have retaken the 1070 apartments, and have gained some more ground. It's very likely that assault of Aleppo itself is likely to resume, but as long as the city is blockaded the rebels inside are slowly running out of supplies. Meanwhile the Russian CVBG is near Syria and flights of Su-33s have been reported around Tartus. Finally a Russian helo made a forced landing and was destroyed on the ground but the crew was evacuated in time.

I'll try to make an update post tomorrow or the day after.

Update.

Russia has begun air strikes against rebel targets around Aleppo and Idlib. The Kuznetsov is launching fighters, the 11356 fired Kalibr missiles, and Russia's Bastion-P coastal AShMs were used against land targets, making it the second AShM Russia has used this way (Granit was used against coastal targets in training earlier this year).

Alleged MiG-31 photo from Syria. There's been a surprising amount of material on the subject lately. I'm not sure what's fueling this, and there doesn't seem to be any good reason to deploy MiG-31s to Syria. However they may want ot test these birds under real conditions in theater, and given that the BM variant may have been upgraded with limited anti-ground capability, theoretically they could even used for air strikes.

Maybe they really want to have a rotation of these to get combat experience to pilots? But yeah, they don't need a high performance interceptor in the theater .

Anyway, the regime has launched offensives in multiple points around the besieged Aleppo areas and the siege is tighter than ever now that they stopped the rebel offensive from the west and pushed them back.

Pro-russian sources are reporting riots and even killings inside rebel-held Aleppo, how much truth does it hold?
https://southfront.org/terrorists-s...vilians-in-aleppo-27-killed-40-wounded-video/

The good thing is that the western media's artificial escalation about the Aleppo siege is over, I told you noone really cares about that or about demonising Russia, except those with an agenda to push or the most naive of readers. And no more idiocy about no-fly zones or responding to cyber-attacks militarily.

It's something that no one here can answer but what is IS's gameplan? How does the IS leadership intend to make up for all the recent reverses suffered? Or has IS reached a point where it's merely responding to moves undertaken by its enemies? They only things IS has going for it is that its enemies remain undivided, that in Iraq there remains unresolved sectarian issues and that it's still able to attract volunteers to its cause but overall; things don't look good.

In a way it has already set out its game plan in its own published materials; even if it would regard events at the moment as a setback. It just goes back a step in its gameplan.

In the end it is to exhaust its enemies. Play off the sectarian divisions in the ME to escalate the level of violence until it once again creates an opportunity for itself, wear down the providers of foreign intervention until they become sick of the whole enterprise and just want out.

It's a policy the US has already felt the burden of and one Russia is probably going to become familiar with.

At the same time direct attacks on the "far enemy" in their own countries will create an environment of fear and uncertainty, creating a sense of isolation and rejection in the Muslim populations there to garner more recruits and escalate the violence there as well. And to be clear, the objective of this violence is simply to kill the infidel in accordance with their own distorted principles of jihad.

The Australian historian Robert Manne has recently released an excellent book where he works through the development of IS underpinning philosophy from its origin to the present day [The Mind of the Islamic State]

Certainly the facts are stacked against DEASH in their current state. No outlookmof resurgence or reinforcement in sight. It took the West a couple years to get organized against them but it's happening now. And Putin in closing in on them in Syria.

I do find the tone of the the OpEds from the Independent and Eric Margolis to be highly opinionated acted and generally not fact based.
