First of all, the OICW is not cancelled.

the milan and javalin missiles are not small arms.

the future of small arms are smart weapons like the OICW or metalstorm. They are the F-22s of firearms.

anyone know the prices for one of those suckers.

Than I missunderstood this thread, sorry.

I think that you cannot describe a OICW as "the F-22 of firearms".
You will never have such a superiority by pure technology like you have in the air. An older assault rifle (Like the G3, FAMAS, etc.) is not that far away from an OICW. Training is a much more important than technology. And there are many weapons which are reliable and precise and are already in service. For me the most important reasen for the US to replace the M-16 is that this gun is not (And has never been) an example for reliability and precision.

the OICW is the future of firearms. It is as revolutionary as the F-22. In my personal opinion certain features, the gun pocess have never been put on a gun before. This fields many new technology like the F-22 does. Overall the gun has a absolute advantage to the guns of today.

The ideas are not all new but its gonna be the first gun to field them. The gun itself is very revolutionary. In fact its just a version of the G36. The gernade laucher(cannon) , targetting system and the gernade are revolutionary. The gernade laucher has the accuracy of a gun. The gun can program air burst mode where it can explode after travellin a certain distance. In fact it got a chip inside it. How can u not call it revolutionary. Other than the G11 which will not be fielded, no gun is as revolutionary. at least in the last 30 years. ( i know the AK47 and m16 and g3 are legends but in the last 30 years this is the most revolutioanry.) In fact its in its own generation of firearms.

the OICW is around 18 thousand a pop. The gernade itself cost 25 dollars each. At these rates, even the US army cant arm everyone with the gun.

The XM8 is the kinetic energy part of the OICW. It is in other words the rifle part. It is a superlight highly interchangable assault rifle. the basic design is from the rifle on the OICW. the frame of course is new but thats just the frame. The basic mechanism( the rechiever) is still from the OICW. I want to stress that it is not a new gun, but rather part of a new gun in a pakage.

Ok, now my two pence.
First there is to say that the XM8 is no longer an opinion for the US as their new standard assault rifle. As I said there is a new competition for the future OICW and some US and european companys are trying to get the contract.
Second, despite the new grenade-system the XM8 is nothing more than a little bit more modern version of the G-36. It is not even close to being the F-22 under the assault rifles. Maybe it's a little bit more accurate, handy and a little bit more reliable but that is just a small factor.
It doesn't make the GI the King of the hill like the F-22 does in its air superiority role.

Wow that sucks. Everysingle time something revolutionary comes out, their host countrys becomes stingy on the budget.

At least half of the OICW survived.

Wouldnt it be crazy if the OICW used caseless bullets like the G11
