It is seems official the budget to retrofit Garibaldi will be in the area of USD 450+ Mio or IDR 7.5+ Trilion, and will be done in Indonesia yard. The budget is expected as it is the similar number that Fincantieri put. It is also not surprising PAL as leading SOE shipyard that will be getting the job, supervise by Fincantieri off course.
However can PAL still have capacity to do significant retrofit on something they have no experience with ? No doubt the real contractor will still Fincantieri, eventough in paper PAL CEO as ussual can use this as bragging materials. It is also being talk that Fincantieri want to use this, as part to put their own design for LHD that PAL have ambition to build. PAL clearly want to have tech transfer from Fincantieri on Light Carrier/LHD design.
Still with present capacity, I suspect there will be many MRO projects that PAL need to reallocate. If they are retrofiting Garibaldi means their Irian graving dock will be use, eventough in paper it is barely fitting Garibaldi. This means they will have to rely on their floating docks for MRO job, as both their dry/graving docks will be use for Retrofitting Garibaldi and finishing UAE and Philipine LPD's.
How this going to effect their MRO jobs, including already much late Bung Tomo class Usman-Harun, let alone it's sister ships ?
