Thai seems decide to postpone Submarine procurement, and switch this to Frigate. As the switch seems already agreed by the Chinese, then most likely it will be Type 54B derivative. Something in the line of Pakistani ones.

This so far Chinese only manage to get Pakistan to accept their MTU clone diesel engines for Submarine. Considering Pakistan financial position, they have no choices though. Thais seems not convinced on Chinese MTU derive clonesclones (for Submarine). Chinese so far seems more successful to convince the export market using their diesels for surface ships.

This is what happens when politics interfere with procurement. RTN had always intended to order a new frigate, which is the additional unit of Bhumibol Adulyadej-class frigate.

The second of three ordered OPV 58 S patrolboats is delivered to the Senegalese Navy. The classname is OPV 58 S, but for some reasons the length of the ships is 62,20 m.

The OPV 58 S will be fitted with missile systems, a first for both the Senegalese Navy and the Piriou shipyard. The 4 × Marte MK2/N anti-ship missiles will be placed forward of the bridge, just behind the OTO Melara 76 mm maingun.

Although the description in the Naval News article only identifies a stern ramp for UUV/USVs and hangar for UAVs. It might be able to temporarily carry helicopters on the the flight deck but there was no specific reference to an aircraft lift to a hangar deck. No doubt the actual vessel will different to the Damen rendering. In all likelihood it will primarily be an oceanic research vessel which can also serve as a hospital ship or HADR vessel.

Since 71.6% of the ship is financed from a EU subsidy specific to the purpose of a oceanic research vessel that will definitely be its primary role.

Portugal itself is only paying 37.5 million Euro (i.e. 28.4%) in order to enable the ship to act as an emergency response and HADR vessel. Hence the ability to carry a single helicopter, the onboard hospital and the flexible cargo space.

It should be noted that the ship was tendered out as design-to-cost with a fixed budget (132 million Euro). And Damen doesn't exactly have the best reputation when it comes to actually completing builds that it bid on with a fixed budget. And Portugal is sorta notorious for announced projects vanishing into thin air at some point when it comes to ships for the Navy.

That's indeed a lot of capabilities/tasks on a ship of only 107 meters long. And that for just €132 million.

But i don't believe that whole LHD-style 94×11 m flightdeck is only suitable for a single helicopter.

Australia’s experience of Damen building to budget and on time with Sycamore, Stoker and Besant has been a good one. Admittedly, Nuyina didn’t go as well; but she was further outside Damien’s mainstream business than the others; and further outside than this ship looks to be as well.

For 132 million Euro they’ll be getting a ship built to merchant, not naval, standards.

Sycamore, Stoker and Besant were also all built in Vietnam, not sure if that had any impact on their schedule or budget.

We have nice clear views now of the Taiwanese IDS during the launch. Hai Lung class inspired and probably copied their internal layout and structure.

Looking to the exterior, you would expect a size of at least 150 meters long and a large amount of crewmembers.

Later i realized the majority of the landingspots are for UAVs, and not helicopters. The small amount of crewmembers shows us that there is a high level of automation of the onboard systems.

With German SM2 fiasco, at least the Italians now can advertise that their 76mm Super Rapido is superior on using against drone. Superior and more economical rather then AA Missiles.

Put it in this thread as more to shown the options on anti drones from survace ships seems can turn out to be their gun. Not missiles.

It is also very likely that CIWS like RAPIDFire, Bofors 40 mm and Millennium 35 mm can handle such threats in an economical way with a short salvo/burst.

I wonder how well the Makassar Class LPDs can defend themselves against such UAVs with the OTO Melara Twin 40L70 Compact on board.

Xavier in Qatar DIMDEX shown several new designs:

1. Italian MCMV,
2. Turkiye Light Corvette and Light Frigate,
3. Combat USV from China and Turkiye,
4. Damen OPV tailor for Pakistan Navy.

#4 I also already put in Pakistan Navy Thread. This is for me is OPV in name, as the set up more inline with full size Corvette. Most of the ships design in my opinion more aim for Nation that want to fokus on Coastal and Green Water defense.
