Wait..what?

Emals being replaced is something Trump has talked about but this looks like he's really flipping the switch on that.

I'll be interested in seeing how expensive that gets.

This program will undoubtedly get huge delays and cost escalations, thanks to this genius. It is actually ridiculous how much power a single man can have in a country with a democratic system.

My bet is it would basically require a complete redesign of the Ford class to run the steam lines and rework the deck .
Pretty much. You'd be reworking several decks to remove the stuff associated with EMALS and then routing steam lines through compartments never intended to take them. A lot stuff to de-risk.

Small mercies that the next two carriers are excluded from this exercise. I'm guessing the changes will be slow walked until a change of administration.

It's an extraordinary decision for sure. I believe EMALS is working satisfactorily with some snags to fix on AARG but I've not been keeping track tbh.

There's also the instruction to revert to hydraulic deck edge elevators, which will be less intrusive but still disruptive. Both changes appear to be driven to POTUS as opposed to any technical input from the USN. I suspect there's going to an interesting book written when this all shakes out.

The IOTUS probably thinks &ucking up the CVN program will enhance the beyond stupid Trump BB.

Here is TWZ take on the possible EMALS to steam conversion. More or less similar to Navy Outlook. Certainly a major redesign of the Ford class will result in more expense and huge delays. I wonder who is really pushing this, perhaps a Trump campaign contributor with financial interest in steam powered kit? Seems to me any return to steam would be best achieved by dusting off the Nimitz class plans. Huge propaganda win for the PLAN over the USN....we have EMALS that works.....assuming they didn't steal GA's design ;). Perhaps the weapons elevators will go back to conventional kit and EMALS and AAG will be retained. The biggest threat to the Ford class is BBGN. BWXT is currently providing reactors for SSN, SSBN, the newly designated SSGN, and the Ford CVN, Adding in the BBGN will be bad news for the Ford class. A minor Ford class redesign, then name this class the Trump CVN and cancel BBGN, problem solved.

Only because because those who are supposed to keep the president in check are refusing to do so, & illegal orders are being obeyed.

The separation of powers in the USA has a basic flaw: the political appointments system for the supreme court. But that's just one factor.

The mental status of at least 20% of the US electorate is also a factor. What that POS McConnell did to derail Obama's justice choice sums up how flawed the appointment process is. Not sure how the process gets fixed.

Mr Trump would like the USN to devop a plan to procure escort frigates from overseas aligned with the Findland Model.

Good idea, but what does this mean for the FFX. Is that destined to become yet another orphan class, or handed back to the Coast Guard.

Puts some context around Hanwa's desire to purchase Austal's American construction yard.

I'm also interested to see if push comes to shove will the USN accept an overseas design standard.

Sounds like what a frigate do. But what do I know?

The order specifically mandates an international competition for a multi-mission platform optimized for:
  • Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW)
  • Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW)
  • Convoy Escort Duties

I'm guessing but I'd imagine the Legend based frigates will replace the LCS as they're decommissioned - and the sooner that happens, the better off the maintenance bill will get for the USN. Apparently the LCS cost about 3/4 as much as an AB to run annually, which is insane.

If that is the case, that's actually sensible - the Legend will cruise further at higher speed (emphasis, *cruise* ) and has better sea keeping than either LCS.

Start another frigate competition ? That's the definition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result.

Donald doesn't like the aesthetics of the Ford class island and wants it moved forward on later builds so they look more like WW2 carriers. Does he want EMALS shit-canned before or after the island move? The USN might get 2 more Ford ships besides Ford and JFK before 2050 but ships 5-10 are not likely this century if these design changes actually happen. I guess the delay will enable BWXT to supply reactors for Trump's BBGNs. What a moron.

Why The Ford Class Carrier's Island Superstructure Is Located So Far Back

I'd heard that but held off commenting because I wasn't sure the sources were reliable. If it is true, it's the most insane thing I've heard this week. So far.

Moving the island would be a *huge* undertaking. At this point, if they're doing both, terminate the Fords at Doris Miller, build them as is, making a short run, and do a new design.

Which would be disastrous for carrier availability.

Agree, if this BS is the way forward then end the Ford class with DM and do a new design. As for future availability, disastrous is putting it mildly. The mid term results may see these changes terminated along with the BBGN.

I don't think the mid terms will impact this, we'll likely see things grind onwards through to the next general election.

I would be tempted to put some money on these changes being reversed almost immediately trump leaves office however.

Senate and House flip to the Democrats should speed up cancellations but the GOP retaining the Senate could drag things out until 2028.
