International community is applauding President Myung-bak Lee as his bold decision led to the rescue of all 21 sailors aboard the South Korean freighter Samho Jewelry, hijacked by Somali Pirates.

Many countries around the world are tracking their freighters, and escorting them with warships to fend off Somali pirates' attacks. However, during the last year alone, the Somali pirates conducted 445 raids on 53 vessels and captured 1,181 sailors. Still, 28 vessels and around 630 sailors are held captive by these pirates.
So far, 8 South Korean vessels were captured by Somali pirates. As they tried to capture yet another freighter, Samho Jewelry, President Lee stressed non-negotiation policies and ordered a rescue mission, fully trusting the skills and capabilities of South Korean Navy's special forces(UDT/SEAL).

President Lee's bold decision to defend the lives of sailors and prevent further losses should be applauded. In addition, the international community should bolster its cooperation in dealing with rogue pirates to eliminate them once and for all.

Piracy will continue as long as they have bases and it is profitable. The simple and effective answer used very successfully in the past was catch a pirate and hang them emendate and then destroy their bases. Mod edit: text deleted

Rip,

Yes i've talked to a good bit of military guys both active and retired everyone agree's nothing will be solved until we start taking action against the bases on shore. That said many of the bases are just fishing villages that have either sided or been taken over by the pirates or other hostile forces outside of the villages control.

The paths for many of the ransoms payed goes threw places like nigeria and such not to mention terrorist organizations. So really we COULD make it so deadly to support them or be around their operation it would simply be a no win but that would require a political will and to accept actions most of the western world no longer has the willingness to accept.

I understand that most of these people are only poor people just trying to get by. So does that mean it’s OK to rob and kill as long as you think you are poor when compared to someone else? I have been to many parts of the world at many times which were very poor and this is what I have learned. Poverty does not make criminals, criminals make poverty.

Think about it, if you are hardworking and improve your station in life and succeed to some extent but then someone with a gun comes along and takes it away from you, even if you or no one in your family is killed or hurt, a big if, would you work as hard in the future? When people can’t keep what they earn, then they just earn enough to get by because if you have something worth stealing it makes you a target. This collective action makes the entire society poorer because wealth comes from human effort and if it is punished not rewarded it declines.

The proscription is harsh but the cycle of criminality and poverty that it creates must be broken by punishing all of those that profit from the crime or it will only continue. Even the ones that profit from it passively, I am truly sorry to say. They are the sea that the pirates swim in.

Let me stop you there....If you have any basic knowledge of African Geography, you would know that West-African Nigeria has nothing to do with East-African somali pirate activities......Look at your map and see there are countries like Eritrea and Kenya where the monies can be laundered.....Please dont come here and write ignorant information:tomato:tomato
