On June 24, the anti-aircraft detachment of the militia shot down a military transport helicopter MI-8 in the are of the Karachun Mount. [The helicopter] was transporting a group of high-level SBU [Security Service of Ukraine] officers and special intelligence-gathering equipment. According to the statement from the Ukrainian side, 9 servicemen of the Ukrainian forces died; however, I do not preclude the possibility that either foreign military advisors or the commanding staff of a PMC [Private Military Contractor] were present on board.

I'm just curious, as there been ANY sightings of American personnel in ANY capacity? I keep hearing about Americans and mercs but I've yet to see a source giving weight to these claims. The Ukraine was and is a NATO partner nation so I'd remind some that the US was working with the Ukrainian military long before the "Ukraine Crisis" began unfolding. If the US is helping Kiev, then I'd say they aren't being very effective, as it stands it seems there is a stalemate. The government has greater resources than the rebels but the rebels (some) are fighting not far from their homes, and are therefore well motivated. Add Russian logistical support to the rebels brings the conflict to a stalemate.
Would live some evidence of NATO actually supporting Kiev in the field. The pictures and videos Feanors has been providing seem to paint a bleak picture regarding the state of the Ukrainian armed forces. The answer is no. Foreign private contractors have been sighted, and at this point we can be fairly certain that they are there, but they're most likely present primarily in a non-combat role for training purposes. There has been no positive identification of US personnel.

If the US is helping Kiev, then I'd say they aren't being very effective, as it stands it seems there is a stalemate. The government has greater resources than the rebels but the rebels (some) are fighting not far from their homes, and are therefore well motivated. Add Russian logistical support to the rebels brings the conflict to a stalemate.

It's not a stalemate. Despite their incompetence, corruption, and the pathetic state of the Ukrainian military, they're slowly but surely advancing against the rebels. As it stands, it looks like they will win. That having been said their victory is far from assured, and their resources are finite. It remains to be seen how things end.

There isn't any.

The pictures and videos Feanors has been providing seem to paint a bleak picture regarding the state of the Ukrainian armed forces. Hardly the beginnings of a fascists blitzkrieg of Eastern Europe if they can't even secure their own country.

There is no current risk of a fascist aggression out of Ukraine, and the risk of an actual fascist government coming to power in Ukraine has decreased not increased over the last couple of months.

No evidence of foreign mercs on board. The aircraft had 3 crew, and 6 SBU officers. Though you're right on the intel. It's suspicious how they get the helos. Then again it's possible that, given how few helos there are, they're primarily used for carrying important personnel and cargo.

Update.

Strelkov's fighter counter-attacked out of Slavyansk using armored vehicles (apparently two T-64BVs both of which were damaged by government fire, but apparently not destroyed). They have completely annihilated a government checkpoint, destroying two BTRs and several trucks. Some sources report 4 destroyed BTRs, but the rebels themselves confirm two destroyed, one captured. The position is called Rybnoe Khozyaystvo. Rebels have captured one armored vehicle, 3 AGS-17s, one Vasilek automatic mortar, one Fagot ATGM, and lots of munitions (rebels claim a truck full). Over 20 government soldiers (National Guard and Army) are reported dead.

Government troops responded with artillery fire and a decisive counter-attack. The physical terrain is back under government control.

Another MVD unit in Donetsk has surrendered to the separatists without a battle. This time it's unit No 3023. The conscripts (about 400 of them) were sent home to their parents. The contract soldiers and officers were offered chances to serve in the rebel militias.

Ukrainian sources on the ground claim that the total number of rebel fighters has increased drastically in Slavyansk, over the last couple of weeks (from ~1500 to 4-5 thousand). They claim that the rebels have significant quantities of armored vehicles, and even MLRS (which I find doubtful). They claim that a rebel counter-attack is possible and even likely, not in a local manner, but generally, to break the blockade of Slavyansk.

After I saw BBC in the 888 war posting footage of Georgia artillery firing into Tshinvali, claiming that it's footage of Russian artillery firing into Gori (something that basically didn't happen) I'm no longer surprised at the manufactured reality that the media displays. The spectacular amount of lying surrounding this particular conflict is staggering in all official media sources. The Ukrainian media is the worst, their lies being so blatant and obvious, they can only be meant for an internal audience isolated from contrary view points. Russian and western media is better, but still quite bad. You'll notice most of my information comes from blogs and private individuals.

While Ukraine is trying to pass this off as a victory, this may be something else entirely, given that they had Slavyansk in a "blockade", and none the less the rebels broke out easily.

The column of rebel vehicles went to Donetsk, where they will probably form a new center of defense. What's really remarkable is that the rebels moved in a military style-convoy with large numbers of armored vehicles and tanks.

Other news reports say a lot of the rebels died on the way out. And this is certainly a victory for the Ukrainian forces. The rebels were forced out, they didn't choose to leave. If there had been any option to stay, they would have stayed.

Other then mainstream news sources, what eyewitness accounts or documentary evidence is there of this? If you're right, I'm interested to see it. All I've heard is that they tore through the checkpoints relatively easily, and got out two columns of ~20 armored vehicles, and 50 civilians trucks/cars.

As for the evaluation... the rebels were surrounded and pinned down, in theory. Instead of completing their destruction and re-taking the city, the army have let the rebels break out of the blockade, and reinforced themselves in Donetsk. Generally when you have the enemy surrounded, and the enemy breaks out of the encirclement, that's not a good thing.

EDIT: More info as it comes in. A rebel armored group conducted a diversionary attack while the main forces left. They lost 1 T-64 tank, 2 BMP-2s, and 3 BMD based vehicles.

Russian FMS reports that a total of 481 thousand people have entered Russia from Ukraine since the beginning of this conflict. 414 thousand are located in the border area. A total of 359 temporary housing centers were set up, most in the border zone. 16 thousand total refugees are in the temporary housing. 20 461 have applied for refugee status. The FMS believes that 90% of them do not intend to stay in Russia, they are there temporarily to avoid the fighting.

Note that to accept refugee status in Russia they have to surrender their national passport. They can get it back only upon forfeiting refugee status. Over July 5th alone they state that 25 000 people entered Russia from Ukraine. There is also a major growth of Ukrainians applying for Russian passports.
