CMA CGM Laperouse is a main-line container ship trading on a main route at 165,000 dwt (capable of carrying 13,800 TEU), is still within Malaccamax. A typical Malaccamax tanker can have a maximum length of 333 m (1,093 ft), beam of 60 m (197 ft), draught of 20.5 m (67.3 ft), and tonnage of 300,000 DWT.

The logic and economics of container trade is the trend to larger ships as main line and smaller 1,500 to 2,000 TEU ships for regional or feeder trade.

In Sep 2020, Wan Hai Lines for example, has received over two 1,800 TEU box ships under development at China's Zhoushan Changhong International Shipbuilding through a resale deal. Hull 2001 and Hull 2002, were initially requested by Malaysian organisation MTT Shipping in 2018. Vessels Value information base shows Wan Hai procured the two vessels at a cost of US$17.7 million.
