Bit embarrasing, as Phillipines Navy wants to conduct their first SINKEX for long time.
Not long time. Their last SINKEX was last year, exactly the same Balikatan exercise.

Ex BRP Caliraya was the target. She actually broke free and beached before they towed her back out.

I put the Reuters version that derive from Yomiuri reports that @koxinga put in General News thread. The Abukuma is basically Destroyer Escort (DE) similar term that USN use up to 50's before change it to Frigates. By present standard it is can be categorize as Light Frigates or Large Corvette.

In that sense it still fit with Philippines latest procurement of Large Corvette/OPV/Light Frigates from South Korea. I suspect this is also part of Japan try to regain initiative to Philippines defense market after ROK seems swept away the latest procurement.

Problem with Japan naval defense products is they don't have anything at this moment that meet classification range of Large Corvette or Light Frigate. Mogami is just bigger then what Philippines procured at this moment. Giving and perhaps modified Abukuma can be the way to open the market. Just like they've done before with Philippines Coast Guard.

It is interesting if Japan later on provide modified and modernized Light Frigate design base on Abukuma for ASEAN market. Not all ASEAN market can afford Mogami based Frigates.
