Another thread in the off- topic forum made me think about the popularity of certain branches and why people choose certain specialisations.

So this thread is aimed at our currently serving members as well as at our members who served in the past.

So please vote for your branch and maybe tell us about your specialisation (Be it combat engineer, radar operator, aircraft technician, etc.) and why you chose it and if it is/was how you imagined it to be.

I served in the German army tank corps. I wanted to operate an IFV so naturally I opted for putting me into an armor or armored recce unit with mechanized infantry coming second. Being in control of a ground fighting vehicle and being part of a well working crew always fascinated me.

While tanking was even more exciting than I had imagined before I also had have no idea about how much time I would spend in the motor pool... ;-)

Marine Aviation, MAG 24: 1980 thru 1982; HMH-464 "Condors" Squadron. CH53E. Aviation Logs, Records and Technical Library Publications. New Rivers Airstation, North Carolina. MOS 6046, 6047

Marine Aviation, MAG 26 & 27: 1983 and 1984; Headquarters Adminstration: A4, EA8B, and F4G. IwoKuni Airstation, Japan.

Japan was the duty station in disliked the most. I also remeber the Beruit bombing. And the Jap commy's with there megaphones spewing their vitrial remarks outside our camp gates. And the MP's with there sentries posted ontop our many barracks. As we went to general quarters.

It was a boring and thankless 8 to 5 job. But advancement was quick. I ended my Marine active-duty E5 with 2 ribbons. Good Conduct and Overseas Duty and an Honorable Discharge.

Later I went back to college and earned and undergrad in the science of civil engineering from the University of Louisville, Speed Scientific School. And currently work in this field at Fort Knox and the general Louisvilles Kentucky area.
