Concerning the consequences of Quebec separation, in addition to what has already been said, I would add that the complete breakup of the country would likely follow. The Western provinces would likely not want to be part of Ontario and the Maritimes are a financial burden nobody would want. BC might not want to be part of a smaller Confederation of Western provinces. I do agree Quebec separation is less likely now but you never know. Western separation may be the bigger threat.

There has been plenty of discussion over the last few days regarding the growing pressure and threats to Canadian influence in the Arctic North.
Canada has taken some steps to increase it sovereignty in that region but is it enough?
The shrinking of the Arctic ice cap is progressing and will begin to make the NW passage a much more feasible and economic alternative as a major trade route from Japan and China to both Europe and the East coast of the US however, where this to occur there is a sovereignty problem.
Canada claims the NW Passage and adjacent seas as internal waters where “Freedom of Navigation” is not recognised.

There are a number of “International Waterways” , maritime and inland transport routes, created by a series of international treaties that allow “Freedom of Navigation” in semi enclosed seas and rivers. These include the obvious such as the Suez and Panama Canals, the Danube and Rhine Rivers and also the Bosphorus and Dardanelles and the Malacca and Danish Straits. There are more.
All these allow both merchant and war vessels freedom to pass at will.

What will Canada’s response be and if it maintains complete sovereignty will the trading nations respect that?
It seems these are the strategic questions which should be occupying the minds of those in Ottawa Because the day will come when a Chinese ship is escorted through the NE Passage by a PLA-N destroyer, then what?

SFA on our part other than some kid sitting at a screen saying “......look at this sir? What do you think it is?”
Response “... Call the rangers to send out a snowmobile to get a picture”

With regards to western separation I live in Alberta and if sock boy gets in again separation from Canada will definitely become a bigger issue and if we go Sask is probably going with us the GOC won't have the extra money to treat Quebec better than the rest of Canada then kaboom Canada's done hopefully it doesn't come to that, with regards to the northwest passage the Americans understand from a security perspective it's better if we control it but they can't publicly say that because it hurts their ability to do freedom of navigation patrols because other countries will start claiming disputed waters as their own ,this issue needs to be part of the NORAD negotiations or we need to heavily defend both entrances of the NWP

Canadian Military to deploy to assist Nova Scotia in post hurricane Dorian clean up.

It’s been a wet, wild and windy day here in Nova Scotia. Category 2 hurricane. Halifax is a mess with a construction tower crane falling around its building.

The participating naval fleet for Cutlass Fury 2019 pulled away Friday to safer waters, likely the Lee of Sable Island but I don’t know.

The news said they were close if they were needed for HADR ops. Unlikely they will but it’s nice to know they are available.

Was wondering where to stick this latest embarrassment so rather than creating a new thread, I will place this link here. I am surprised this security breach hasn't been more widely reported on internationally. Betting other 5 eyes members are pissed. The last major F...up saw a spy (RCN lieutenant) sentenced in 2012 to 18 years but he was put on parole after serving 1/3 of his sentence. Moral, of the story, if you are a spy, best to get caught in Canada. Absolutely fu.. disgusting!

Yes, no security service is immune to this kind of betrayal. However, Canada is a disgrace when it comes to punishing these a$$holes. It is not only traitors that get off lightly here, most criminals do as well. Two generations of bleeding heart kumbaya idiots running things has gotten us to this point. With such lax treatment of traitors I am surprised the other 5 eyes members continue to risk their intelligence information with us.

Not to mention an apparently chronically leaky Australian government: Spy chief warns foreign intelligence agencies won't trust Australia if leaks continue

All nations suffer from this, and every intelligence agency has protocols in place to compartmentalize the damage caused by a leak. Not great, but not the end of the world either.

This guy was extremely high-up and had access to a wide range of stuff according to reports. Not sure how compartmentalized he was. Bad enough in peacetime but during an actual conflict situation the damage he could cause might be immense. Your link is a somewhat different problem. Leaks to the press do compromise intelligence agencies but the intention to provide information to an adversarial foreign government is a much worse.

This article further confirms my numerous comments about the Canadian electorate's apathy wrt defence. The election campaign has seen virtually zero comment on defence issues and I don't expect any in tonight's leadership debate. Junior will likely remain in power but he may not get a majority. Either way, defence will suffer and that will be fine with most voters here.

Analysis: With Canadians tuned out on defence, political parties can safely ignore the topic at election time
Deja vue John and the same applies here too.

Some polling information that sort of explains the election results. There are some depressing results including, a majority of Canadians support continuing deficits, they want free pharmacare, and are divided on pipelines which will fuel Western separation due to economic losses. Even increased deficits can't pay for this and all the other dumbass programs envisioned by these fools. It will in part come out of defence cuts. Expect fewer ships and jets.

Without getting into politics I too feel that the cash to cover these programs will come from defence and other programs. Time will tell as we will likely be back at the polls in two years. I am amazed at the shortsightedness of our population. So much for remembering what the Liberal Party did to former Vice Admiral Mark Norman.

I don’t recall any significant mention of the Norman affair by any of the other parties during the election campaign.
