They are good ships which should be economical to operate. I was discussing these ships with another person with the Uruguay thread of Hamiltons... Bangladesh has done well for the short term. Hopefully used Chinese or new Chinese frigates can be purchased much alike Pakistan's F-22P Sword class in the future....

Also the Prime monister ordered two Jiangwei(F-22B) Guided missile frigates and 3 Z-9EC anti submarine warfare helicopters on her recent trip to China. Additionally the Navy procured 1 ex-RN Roebuck Class Hydrographic survey vessel which is curently the largest vessel of this type in the Bangladeshi navy.

The navy is also considering further orders of the F-22B to replace the old Brittish frigates

Its an impressive list of modernization for the Bangladesh navy... Appears the government is aware and concerned about their maritime approaches and seas. Furthermore, I feel the government is spending an appropriate amount of funds to meet the threat.

Yep the Incident where Myanmer set up a Drilling plant in our waters has been a wakening call for the Government and the military. The fact that the problems of maritime boundaries has not yet been solved has also helped fuel this new urge for quick modernisation o the navy. I will post more about the Bangladeshi navy's developments when I get the news.

There have been recent reports that Bangladesh could be trying to purchase another frigate from South Korea. Added to the fact that we already ordered 2 F-22Bs from China, this is the third guided missile frigate our navy has been trying to acquire. My claims can be checked out at Bd military.com

Are missile frigates really necessary for bangladesh?

Who are we arming against anyway, India? or is it for war against myanmar?

if India is the case, there is no chance to prevail. If myanmar, its china that arms the same county.

Defence purchases are not necessarily profitable, they are a serious drain on foreign exchange. aren't patrol boats enough to gaurd against smuggling and protecting oil resources?

When foreign nations provide loans to buy their weapons, in this case ships, with very good interest rates far below the world average, one should take advantage of the very favorable loans. Frigates are useful to take action against the enemy above, on, and below the sea surface. The Chinese build a good modern frigate at a modest price which will be easier and cheaper to maintain in the future.

But you are correct, patrol boats are sufficient to patrol the EEZ... Patrol boats take action only on the sea surface...

My friend it is common knowledge in the Defence sector in Bd that we are up against a more or less silent arms race with Myanmar. In recent years Myanmer has upgraded its navy with Guided missile frigates and guided missile corvettes all equipped with C-802s, since Myanmer and Bangladesh have disputed Maritime boundaries and since Myanmer really has no other enemies in the region, it doesn't take a genius to figure out who their military upgrades are targetted at.
Its not just the navy the entire military is going through a massive upgrade

LONDON December 2 reported that the Russian military, according to News Network reports on December 1, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the country before his speech at the Army Day ceremonies announced that the Government will bulk purchase of various types of weapons and equipment designed for the protection of their economic zones, to participate in United Nations peacekeeping operations. China has been a major arms supplier to Bangladesh, the procurement of most of the weapons may be in the favorable financial conditions or military assistance to China within the framework of supply.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced that the government is drafting a large number of weapons and equipment import contract, plans to purchase modern tanks, artillery, air defense missile systems, fighter aircraft and helicopters. British "Jane's Defence Industry" magazine reported that Bangladesh had purchased 140 armored personnel carriers, have all been received and the armed forces.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the Government of Bangladesh will also increase the cost of training military personnel, while Cox's Bazar improve air base infrastructure, strengthening patrolling the waters of the Bay of Bengal, in the Mill Pool will also be set up 37 anti-aircraft regiment.

China is currently the main supplier of weapons of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Prime Minister announced in the arms procurement plan most likely still China's supply of Bangladesh is expected to be more favorable financial conditions, or in China within the framework of military assistance reach a purchase agreement. China's aid is extremely important to the modernization of the army in Bangladesh, Bangladesh military budget after only 15 billion dollars. The tanks in the report are Type 96Gs, the T-84 yatagan has been scrapped from the list according to my sources. Also Bangladesh palns to open her fist ever aeronautics complex with Chinese help. We have ordered a second batch of F-7Bgs as a stop gap fighter, until the J-10B is availble, we chose this over other Russian aircraft, showing increasingly better ties with China.

Bangladesh Navy procurement of two frigates from China increased combat effectiveness

LONDON June 23, according to Russian analysis of the world arms trade center site reported on June 21, Reuters quoted a source in Bangladesh Ministry of National Defense as saying, Bangladesh Navy plans to expand China's national defense cooperation within the framework of the activities of two frigates, making it the Navy frigate equipped to seven the total number of the relevant supply agreement was reached in March this year.

Bangladesh, local media pointed out that the procurement of Chinese frigate will be able to enhance the fighting strength of Bangladesh navy to protect marine resources on the protection of the Bay of Bengal. Myanmar began in 2008 and Bangladesh in the areas of territorial dispute (San Martin Island, 50 nautical miles southwest of) the Continental Shelf oil and gas exploration in Bangladesh immediately deploy naval forces to the disputed area, stop exploration in Myanmar and the Chinese leadership expressed concern about the post-conflict situations, Bangladesh to withdraw its own warships.

It is reported that, in addition to procurement of two frigates from China, the Bangladesh Navy will receive three active duty from the British warships, including an offshore hydrographic launch "Roebuck" and No. 2, "Castle" class coastal patrol boats, including hydrological tracking ship will be delivered in June this year, Bangladesh Navy, two patrol boats of the maintenance and improvement work has been started in the UK.

Bangladesh Navy currently serving the latest and most advanced surface warship in South Korea made a "Ulsan" class "Bangabandhu" frigate, commissioned in 2001, its full load displacement of about 3,500 tons, Use CODOD all diesel engine, dual-axis to promote a maximum speed of 28 knots, the main weapon is a 76mm gun, 8 "automat" anti-ship missiles, two sets of MK32 torpedo tube and an anti-submarine helicopters. I'm really not sure how accurate these sources are. Especially the one about J-10 and JF-17, that one looks to be a really badly translated article from Chinese. I certainly think Chinese shipyards can help Bangladesh a lot, but I just don't know if anything has been signed.

I know that a couple of deals have been signed with the CSOC, but I dont know know how big they are or what they are composed of, there has been a lot of talk about this but my sources can't give me any concrete info.

As for the J-10, well truth be told, there really are no solid proofs here. Thing is before the Care taker govt took over, BD had agreed to purchase large no. of F-7BGs as stop gap fighters and later buy the J-10, how ever when the Care taker govt, took over these plans were scrapped, we stopped buying F-7BGs.Ever since the Awami League govt came to power, it was decided that 3 sq of new fighters were to be purchased,( the mig-29 was the govt's favourite and the Flankers were the Air forces) how ever after the Prime Ministers visit to China in mid 2010, the Mig-29 plan was scrapped and another sq of F-7Bgs were ordered(to be deliverd early 2011).
So one can speculate that Bd is back in its old track to procure the J-10(or so say my sources in the air force).
This claim is futher backed by the fact that large amounts ofweapons deals were signed with China on the PMs visit and the fact that the chief of our air force is on a trip to China(I think he is back home already).
