Reading the economist the other day i saw a short article on defence recruitment in the US, in short they since the 1st of Jan 07 will allow slightly obese no us residents to join and receive a green card after completing 1 Day of basic training. Any comments

On a more serious note we are recruiting ex-cons... that does bother me. It shows that the US forces are so hard up for enlistments that we will dig at the bottom of the barrel to fill Army ranks. The 92,000 infantry expansion Bush is looking to fill will not come easily in a time of an unpopular war with no end in sight. I don't think the Walter Reed scandal is going to help either. If we don't take care of our GIs when they have sacrificed an injury what does that say about us as an armed force?

Meanwhile, members of the Blackwater Mercenary Company are making more than the top US generals for work in Iraq.

The lesson here is that the Republican party wants a gov't military to fail, so it can impliment a private army that isn't answerable to the Geneva Convention of the UCMJ.

Christ, that amount of money I wouldn't mind jumping over there for a while. And they'd probably get their choice of the cream of the crop, best soldiers who need some cash.

Makes u wonder how much the US is paying the company. Must be unbelievable amounts of money changing hands over there.

try getting a job in the oil service industry...you can make 210 a day in meal allow and away bonus alone...on top of a cruisey 3 on 3off roster...not get shot at, and still buzz about in choppers. If you can handle the frustration of lousy management!

I think blackwater get some pretty dirty jobs...

The problem is that enlisted individuals in the U.S. army don't get paid much compared. I believe a private only gets paid around 16k a year if I'm not mistaken. I think you can earn similar or even better wages flipping burgers full time at Burger King(first job 3 years ago). You won't be attracting many with that kind of pay scale.

If you were to increase that salary by half, I'm sure the Pentagon won't need to scratch their heads as much.

The news reports say the blackwater dudes get paid as much as 300 to a grand a day. They can wax me and use me as a surf board with that kind of wage.

The benefits of joining the military far outweigh the base pay. I recieve a big fat housing stipened that keeps my family living in a pretty nice pad. Upon graduation from the Citadel and entry in to the Navy my student loans were forgiven. There's always nice little bonuses you can get like flight pay or whatever you might be eligable for. You get duty free at the base exchange. You get 3 square meals. The big thing is you can survive without spending much of anything and put away alot of money. By the time I got married I had saved over 100k, needless to say she spent it all but that's what marriage does to you. The US spends more per man than any nation and you do get to see it.

Only an idiot would spend 15 years in service and get out, you have to do your twenty to recieve benefits. And yes I do plan to retire to the Gold Coast but only because I have family in Logan. Actually immigration raised the standards to retire in Australia so you won't see too many US military retiring down under. We don't make enough in retirement to meet the qualification unless we have other sources of income and a quarter million dollars in trust for four years. Only admirals can afford that. You can kiss US retirement dollars bye-bye. The only reason I will qualify is due to my familial ties.

And why do you reckon they get paid that much exactly?

How much would you accept to have your head chopped off? 300 to a grand a day?

If they are a little plump what is the big deal, after basic training they will lose that weight and be able to pass a PT test.

As far as criminal go, the U.S Army used to be real sticklers on who got in, if you even had a drunk driving offense your chances of getting in could be a real challenge. For less crimes why not let people serve their country, it will give them proper structure and give them a chance to get their sh_t together. ( A good NCO will keep them in line.)

And to Eckherl above, you're absolutely right. Those guys are going to benefit the community by productively doing jobs that need to be done in the military. It sure beats them sitting around doing nothing.

Yeah, the recruitment standards were (and perhaps still are) way too high. You used to need a waiver for the smallest infraction; most recruiters have to dance and sing, all the while knowing that alot of good recruits are being turned away for BS.

Why does a prospective patriot in good shape with an ASVAB of 88 get tossed for having "Flat-feet"?! For a Navy life living in a can :unknown !

Oh and BTW: if you ever want to quit smoking, Boot camp is the ONLY way to go. There is nothing more effective in breaking the habit than to have an RDC breathing down your neck while you cycle and sweat for 3 months cold-turkey. :eek:nfloorl:
