The huge range of the S series creates geopolitical concerns as well. Especially for export customers. For example there was a big crisis between Greece+Cyprus and Turkey when Cyprus wanted to buy the S-300 back in the nineties. (In the end Greece bought them instead)

And while we are on Anti-air systems.

Pantsir SA currently with 12 missiles and guns.
But the new version will most likely ditch the gun and mount 18 new missiles with improved range.

Yep. Allegedly the new Pantsyr variant will be a two-vehicle system, and the regular version will still use Kamaz trucks, but the Arctic one will use a tracked vehicle.

A batch of four Su-35S delivered to VKS.
This is part of the newly signed contract on 50 Su-35S.
Which put the total figure up to 52 Su-35S delivered so far.

At the same time, KnAAZ are producing Su-35MK for China, part of the 24 export contract.

So the Su-35MK is some sort Modernized Export variant of the Su-35S?
I am afraid that the Chinese just illegally copy the Su-35 and later will produce it in their own version after these 24 aircrafts...

The Chinese have wanted Su-35s for sometime and the Russians are concerned about cloning as the Chinese can produce them for less and steal some of Russia's export market which is why this sale took so long. I guess the business opportunity couldn't be ignored and Su-35s with Chinese engines is not an export threat anytime soon.

I don't think it's the business opportunity. China has done Russia quite a few economic favors over the past ~3 years. This is probably part of the repayment.

Is the export version for China modernised or downgraded? Does it have the Irbis-E radar for example?

24 units are a small number for a big country like China, there is going to be some referse engineering going on there, heh.

I'm sure that will happen. Looking to the past china only buys 'trial batches and if we like them we will buy more', to reverse engineer and illegally copy them later...
And I think the Russians know that too, but with the low oil and gas prices today....

China has problems with engine technology though and I think it might be the metallurgy. they seem to be having trouble reverse engineering that.

I am very surprised that China has not looked at the Su-34..
It is on the export list at Rusoboro..

The Tactical bombers in PLAAF are 3rd Gen material.

There was an article on the Su-35 export to China;
The prosess has taken years. And Russia has taken every step to secure their TM copyright in the contract.

If they find out China is up to no good, they will cut all engine support, and i mean not just on the Idz 117S, but on other contracts as well.

There are many other engines being exported to China. AL-31F, AL-31FN, RD-93's etc

Both Russia and China (China moreso) lag behind The West in engine technology. It is the one area the West still holds a significant advantage. IIRC, there was a news report awhile back that China planned to spend 20-30 billion on jet engine development. Not only are there metallurgical issues but also manufacturing techniques. The latter can't be reversed engineered and apparently are much harder to steal.

On the civilian side of it, China and Russia is going to co-op on the widebody airliner.
Guess whom are doing the engines R&D..?

Hint; see PD 14

There are reports that China is developing its own strike fighter derivate from the Flanker with a side by side configuration.
A side-by-side seater tactical bomber ala Su-34 as a concept is a sound approach.

But this time, China will not get their hands on one of the Su-34 prototypes, like they did with one of the Su-27K(33) =>J-15.

There was nine Su-34 prototypes during the 90's. Two none flyer i think.

So with that, i'll say -Good luck China.
It will take them time, a long time. And when they finally get them in service by the numbers the fighter-bomber as a 4th++ Gen concept is outdated.

Not as long as you think. The project has been allegedly going on for some time already. And they've been working with Flankers for about two decades now. Whether it will be as effective as the Russian Su-34 remains to be seen.

Well, to be fair, even the Su-34 is somewhat outdated as we speak. Its supposed to be produced back in late 90's. But no funding, no fun.

Anyway, it will be an improvement over the JH-7A etc.
Perhaps they design it with W-bays. So there you go.

I dont know how ambitious the chinese are going with this one. It surely will turn out somewhat different than the SU-34 if they are going to design it with an own understanding of Airwar. But if it will be somewhat comparable in the parameters and capabilities, than i guess they will have a strike aircraft with not too many equivalents in that region and class. The proliferated Strike Eagles and Su-30s arent in the same, thats apperently what russians and chinese understand.

Depends on what you compare it to. The Europeans are still using Tornados, and the Su-24 is still more numerous then the Su-34 (this will change over the next year). But the Su-34 is also a carrier for some fairly sophisticated EW, and a whole range of recon and EW pods are being designed for it, to decrease reliance on dedicated EW and recon platforms, which are in short supply. The Su-34 will become a very important aircraft for the VVS over the coming decade. Probably more important then the Su-35S.
