Look's like the leak's that we had written off as being pure media BS guesswork may have some truth to them.

Submarine program: AFP confirms investigation into second leak of classified information - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Still very hush hush so could be something has been leaked (Hope not due to reasons already listed by the experts on here, Mainly leading to possible destruction of all the work done so far) or that with the media claims they are being cautious (rightly so) and checking if there is anyone actually talking to the media or if it is all BS media talk (preferred option).
The Ship of State is a leaky vessel ............ and it leaks from the top! At least that was my experience from life in Canberra.

The AFP hate these referrals. They can be career destroying if the investigator goes too far.

nope, all the prev comments were about what can happen to the eval process if there is a leak - and why a leak is unlikely for a number of reasons.

My comments before are based on my actual experience in an investigation process for a leak.

An investigation can be triggered even if there is no substance - there is an obligation to investigate as soon as the Govt thinks that a process may be compromised. eg material could be draft documents which have no substance behind them as they were working documents - I don't know of any interim documents that survive and stay intact through to release. If there is an inference that someone is leaking then the Govt has an obligation to kick off the process

OTOH my team spent 6 months investigating leaks without it ever hitting the open press. Person charged, dismissed, lost their super and sent to gaol. never made public.

I would refer to my prev and once again say that people need to pause and not get over excited about whats happening. The stats for 3 bidders are so low that even a moron has a 33% chance of being correct.

I can also tell you that sometimes the media says some stupid stuff just to flush an answer.

Part of my training in Ministerial Support was to have 2 x solid weeks of Media Liaison training with ex-ABC staff. So as exciting as this may appear on the surface, there is a lot of "he said she said" and no proof of life statements. and as said a number of times - there's a 33% chance of saying something that will ring true even if they guessed it.

its a chief wiggam moment

I read recently that techport has been approved for a wharf extension by the SA governement.

With Brisbane due to be launched in a few months, can we actually fit two Awd's at the existing wharf ?

Poor planning if they can't.

Have a look at the Techport Flythrough video below:

Techport Flythrough

Also the home page of the Techport website has some 'real' photos too:

Australia’s premier naval industry hub supporting The Australian Navy AWDs

So the answer to your question, the current wharf is not long enough for two AWD's nose to tail (or should I say bow to stern!).

Edit: Just came across this:

http://www.techportaustralia.com/upload/media/media-releases/Techport expansion committment.pdf

The answer to your question is that the wharf is to be lengthened by 22m (so not enough for end to end), but according to the media release, the AWD's will berth side by side.

Watching the RAN CN on the ABC he seems to be toeing the company line, doesn't seem so enthusiastic towards it might have a lot of reservations about the French being able to pull it off, just hope the French don't screw us in the future.

one thing I keep thinking if is the French could redesign their SSN why didn't EB do the same with, they have proposed everything from LHD to AWD to meet the needs of RAN, I really would have liked them to throw their hat in the ring

There's still the bizarre possibility that Australia cancels the contract and opts to build the son of Collins instead.

I'm curious as to what Navantia's reaction to basically living beside DCNS in Adelaide would be. IIRC, neither company is in exactly amicable terms with the other.

Provided the security and IP issues can be worked out. Which obviously they can if since DCNS won..

It seems as though we should (eventually) get what we originally wanted "A non-nuclear sub with capabilities approaching that of an SSN"

Hopefully, DCNS learns enough from the French builds to ensure ours are a not delayed and stay on budget.

"If" it all works as advertised , it should be a pretty good boat.

All build in Australia - another win

I bet there is a few surprised people though.....

Love it or hate it, the positive is that the project is moving forward - and there will be no further delays ( touch wood)

I didn't think that a non-nuclear version of a nuclear boat would have been considered. I wonder how a conventional version of an Astute or Virginia class would have fared in this competition.

Those boats are much larger however (by displacement) than the French boat.

I would've thought that power consumption will be a big obstacle - nuke boats have oodles of electrical energy I assume. That will be a challenge.

D0 remember seeing an article in Australian Warship Magazine a few years ago about a downsized DE Virginia but really changing the propulsion system and downsizing in one design maybe a step to far.

i must admit, i had a "Jaw on the floor" moment when i saw the french got it.

i'm calling it early, this can only end badly.

it's as if the experience with the A330, Tiger, MU-90 and MRH-90 taught us nothing.

yep hope they put huge penalty clause in the contract, on time on budget and most of all meets spec laid down.

is the government gluttons for punishment dealing with the French again?

gf and volk, you guys are too mad to comment? :)

It definitely came as a surprised as I thought the German would have won it based on the commercial terms. But alas, the French must have promised some sexy gears or some fancy commercial terms. Hoping that this will not be once again a all promised but can't deliver exercise with the French again.

But hey, endurance seems to be what RAN is really after. Option J is too short a leg, Option G is unproven.
