Are there any semi-reliable systems that can stop nukes?

What kind of nuke? A free-fall bomb? A cruise missile? An ICBM? Which kind of ICBM, is it MIRVed, does it have pen-aids, what kind of pen-aids? Are we talking about a single missile? Single warhead?

I think the most advanced and future nuclear threat will come from hypersonic ballistic missiles, probably single nuke-warhead, and they will be interceptable only by laser interceptor (more than 1000 kv of power required, maybe) and evolved, AESA, ground based, sea based radar stations.
Actually THAAD, PAC-3 inside and outside AEGIS, and Ground Based Interceptor have the chance (if perfectly integrated together) to defeat any foreign ICBM and supersonic missile, on the paper.
Obviously, this system has never been proved against a real ICBM, IRBM, SLBM saturation fire, luckly.
I still believe that the only chance to intercept MIRV in real nuclear war should be have space based laser-interceptor and radar aquisition systems, like sat-com satellite, this was a cold-war idea...and was realist.

In nowadays some armies use their aircrafts to stop them and some of them use their defence-missile ability like Patriot, S-300s or S-400s etc...

stopping Nukes eh.. I really got into this

Feanor thank you, your questions are dead on. There were a couple of responses above mentioning THAAD etc. Lets look at this from whats been designed to work and what is deployed, and what these systems may stop.

how can you get a nuke to its target..

1. Ballistic (ICBM)
2. Cruise Missile / Surface to Air SRBM (short range ballistic )
3. Free Fall bomb
4. Air to Surface Missle / Plane / Helicopter
5. Suitcase
6. Whatever else Tom Clancy will think of

1. ABM: Anti Ballistic Missile - Purpose Built...
ABM Treaty: Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
-originally read 2 zones per nation, non mobile launchers
-later revised to 1 zone per nation

US - Sprint/Spartan ( Nike ) : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_(missile)
developed by US as part of the ABM system per the ABM Treaty in late 70s, was taken down after less than 1 year was intended to protect Grand Forks Missile Base.

USSR - A135 System: A-135 anti-ballistic missile system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
developed by USSR as part of the ABM treaty using two kill vehicles, a high exo-atmospheric and low endo-atmospheric missiles ( Gorgon + Galosh/Gazelle ), both have been tested against single, MIRV warheads and are still active around Moscow with the Russian military.

Currently under development ( Anti-ballistic missile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia )

Russia A235 - Modification and development of the A135 system, the Gazelle has been apparently upgraded and updated, no specs released

US: THAAD/SM systems - being tested now successfully by the USA

CHINA: Has carried out a satellite kill a few years back, however, killing one satellite vs a MIRV (multiple independent nuclear warheads + decoys ) is a whole different story

2. Surface to Surface/Cruise/SRBM

a. Cruise Missles ( Tomahawk / KH55 )
b. SRBM *do not exist* ( Pershing / SS-20 aka RSD10 Pioneer )
c. Theatre Ballistic Missles ( SCUD/ MGM-140_ATACMS / ISKANDER )
-- lets pretend the MGM-140 can be retrofitted with a nuclear warhead (or think of the MGM-52 lance )
d. High speed surface to surface... (naval - Bazalt/Granit/Yakhont p500/700/800)

who can kill this type of a delivery system -
1. bomb it from the air, or eliminate its launch ability ( tomahawk / kh55 ) from ships or planes usually, take out the planes by intercepting them, SRBM launchers or Theatre Ballistic Missiles are ground based and you need to find the "launchers" - think special forces during Desert Storm, hunting for the scuds.

2. High Speed Surface to Surface, the naval soviet/russian P series missles are trickier as they are low flying, nuclear tipped, and go at mach 3 and can be ship or sub launched ( I believe p800 brahmos has been modified for land to sea launch and air launch ) .. however, Brahmos and P800 has not been used Sur-Sur rather Sur-Sea / Air-Sea, the limit of these is their range, which is usually 200-500km

if these are already launched..

a. Cruise Missiles, slow, fly low.. a (Russian) ZSU / (US) M163 VADS Phalanx can take care of these, over land or sea, if the radar can detect and take out in addition the TOR-M / OSA-M / Pantsyr from Russia can take care of "detectable" inbound Cruise Missiles. Iron Dome from Israel should be able to take care of it.

[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M163_VADS"]M163 VADS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] or 9K22 Tunguska - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

b. SRBM - Pershing/Pioneer 500+ km range, basically a "shorter ranger ICBM" - maybe the Russian S300 could take out a Pershing, or it would be up to the ABM defenses + air launched interceptor missiles. (some help here would be good from the forum )

c. Theatre Launched BMs / SCUDS, ([ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theater_ballistic_missile"]Theatre ballistic missile - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] ** this wiki article needs to be fixed) launch hard fly fast drop like a stone... Patriot (didnt do that well in First Gulf War..), S300/S400 (in theory has been tested), Iron Dome, SM series could intercept in theory.
-- side note: Iskander from Russia, said to be able to fly ballistic or flat, would make it harder to hit.

d. High speed surface to surface - P500/P700/P800 ( P-700 Granit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) - on approach to target, a cannon / phalanx would not do much as the speed is too great, but nuke might not detonate, currently a system is in development for high mach intercept by the US

3. Free Fall Bomb...

Shoot down the plane which is carrying it before it gets over head (or within the bomb glide path of your house ) - a JSOW (stand off air launched bomb/glide/munition) could be taken out by a short range / medium range surface to air complex ( such as SM/TOR system )

Basically, the S300/S400/Patriot should be shooting down the plane which is trying to bring a bomb to you before it can deliver it.

4. Air to Surface...

Same as above, take out whatever is launching it.

5. Suitcase...
Get dogs which can sniff? Radiation detectors, even police / troopers in the USA have them and can tell if a car drives by with radioactive material ( Nuclear detectors in Washington state detect radioactive cat | Homeland Security News Wire )

6. Tom Clancy...
Whatever he writes is pretty riveting, I am just not down with most of his books still having moscow getting blown up somehow, either a crazy dictator, or a crazy general, or a terrorist group. He really needs to focus on Beijing or something. Honestly I do not think a US Special forces team or a Ghost Team needs to be sent to the Red Square..

Oh, as to how to stop his nuclear scenario, call Jack Ryan ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Ryan_(Tom_Clancy_character) )

oh Merry Christmas I'm going to bed. People do not ask such open ended questions like this, I should have been in bed a while ago.

Cheers, Merry Xmas!
