Russian AJAX hypersonic bomber

I think this is very interesting topic for our discussion. Look at this link
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wsDSRKIEiw"]YouTube - NASP Chief Scientist Paul Czysz Of AJAX MHD Concept[/ame] Is this real can the Russian engineers produce a hypersonic bomber which can travel at 16 times the speed of sound?

Looks unlikely. Maybe 1-2 prototypes, but not anywhere near production-ready.

I saw an interesting debate on this from another forum some time ago. They were arguing on russian hypersonic jets. According to 1 member, the Russian have been heavily experimenting the hypersonic jets even during the 70-80's. He showed some pics of Russian test jets which design does indeed looked 80's.

The debate went on, to say after the breakup of the SU, American companies (not sure which) got very interested in this hypersonic research that they teamed up with these russian experimental teams to jointly research hypersonic flight ( as far as civilian use of it being the aim). Some time later, the Americans suddenly quit the project, and some years later the Americans came out with their now on going hypersonic vehicle test bed. ( You know that black pilotless hypersonic jet by Lockheed? )This vehicle is claimed to have its roots from this very Russian research. That when the Americans learned enough, they decided to go their seperate way and build their own, due to its military application.

It would suggest from above that the Russian were ahead in hypersonic research, and the Americans used the break up of the Soviet Union to pounce on the hypersonic tech that the russian's declassified to help their own research.

They also had a few pictures of russian hypersonic test planes from the Soviet times and some AJAX documentations.

I believe AJAX was 1 of the latest and most advanced research of Russian Hypersonic by 1990's. I'm not sure where Russian R&D stand on AJAX or hypersonics now, but there seem to be a classifying nature of the research once Putin came to power. Yeltsin is very good in showing everyone what Russia have and gave everyone a piece of the cake. He is after all a Western puppet President.

But I'm not sure if Russia have the tech nor capability to build a hypersonic bomber right now, as I believe that hypersonics is still in the R&D stage. But Putin once said that they posses a new technology that can hit anywhere in the world, and if that is a hypersonic bomber, that would be 1 of the best kept secret from Russia. Although I doubt it.

If you look carefully at youtube link it says that there was a radar site in Sweden that tracked a bomber flying at 16 times the speed of sound across all of Russia in 2001 that's 8 years ago and 8 years is a long time who knows where the research is now.

How do you know it was a bomber that was tracked?

That what I thought, more likely to be an advanced missile of some kind.

Looking at the whole thing it seems doubtful. The science seems dubious at best, as does the practicality of the project. The Russians would had to have made some pretty giant leaps in secret to make a manned hypersonic plane sustainable.

I concur.

I found this on the NASA site...

http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/news/NewsReleases/1996/96-15.html

I remember the Discovery channel running a program called Extreme Machines, somewhere between late 1999 & 2002. It showed a team from Boeing (who where researching the precursor to the Dreamliner), using the Russian "Koncordski" (TU-144) as a test bed, so that they could develop a 2nd generation supersonic jet, to replace Concorde.

Needless to say, due to financial constraints & the collapse of the commercial airline market in 2001, it died a death, closely followed by Concorde itself.

So there is considerable fact in your statement....

I know due to my narative style of post, it may look like just a unproved story, but if you research on th origines of US (NASA?) research on hypersonic testbed, which they are doing now, You'd find that they indeed teamed up with the russians after SU to take advantage of russians research on hypersonic aircraft. I've lost that website, so I cant link the pictures unfortunately.

12 to 16 times the sound of speed? Omg that is super fast.
With those kind of speeds you can run out almost every SAM or Airdefence system on the world:rolleyes:

Just for the record mach 1 = 1100kmph? is this correct? so this means that with the this kind of speed you can fly from moskou to moskou in less than a hour.

damn in my opion this is totally insane....:shudder

Actually you can't quite compare mach number to Kmh because it varies with height, but it does sound about right for sea level.

And 12 - 16 times the speed of sound is 100% no doubt in my mind, a vast overstatement. Even NASA's unmanned X43 is only capable of mach 7 at over 100,000 feet and doesn't have a landing capability. The likelihood of the Russians having successfully designed something to move at twice that speed, and be manned safely AND to be a reusable, workable bomber, is simply beyond the realms of possibility.

If you give this thing plasma stealth that Russians have you can have something interesting.

..After watching the clip again, the "method" of magnetising the air, is very similar in comparison to the Russian Skvhal "super torpedo", in that the torpedo releases micro bubbled gases from its nose, breaking up the friction, thus allowing the torp to move faster thru the water (well that & the fact that it's got a Rocket motor in the back, rather than a prop !).

To add some more "info" to your discussions, you could always read thru an older / similar discussion I found here....

Lots of "discussion material", which should cover off some (if not ALL)of your questions...

Erm...,

This sounds so 'Eighties. Unfortunately Maggie scrapped the "£10-billion" proposal for HOTOL (albeit a 'civilian' project).

Skylon is it's latest evolution. Maybe our Aussie cousins could tell us more...?

What was tracked, is not a manned bomber, its most probably an unmanned research vehicle for the hypersonic test. The video never mentioned anything about it being manned. a manned hypersonic bomber is still many years away from seeing the light. Also mach 14-16 is within an acceptable hypersonic speed range. I believe hypersonic speed is defined as anything above mach 5.

Tupolev had Tu-2000 MACH 20 bomber on its drowing boards during the Soviet times.
And an A-60 flying laser laboratory. That doesn't mean that the next soviet bomber would have been a Mach-20 flying saucer with laser beams. ;) The project was only on the drawing board, and for all we know never reached prototype stage. Plasma stealth has been on the drawing board for ages.
